Summary

We need just $5,000 more to fully fund a Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WASH) project in another rural school in Mozambique. This project will take place in a Massinga District school where girls are missing 30% more schooling than boys. We'll provide training in women's health, hygiene, hand-washing and disease prevention education. This school does not have any kind of toilet structure for children. Girls are dropping out of school at puberty because of lack of facilities but we can change this.

Challenge

This community is lacking the basic needs of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, and it is the girls and women who suffer most. Girls are missing school because they are searching for water with their mothers from as young as 6 years old, just to provide for their families. On top of this, girls are dropping out of school at 10 - 12 years old because there are no toilets at the school, so during menstruation girls stay home out of shame and embarrassment because theres no facilities. This is NOT FAIR

Solution

In the community, we will drill a clean water well, build a full sanitation center for boys, girls and teachers, with a separate communal hand wash station and a private menstrual hygiene room. The entire project is $20,000 but this $5,000 will fully fund the construction of the sanitation center and training. This project includes 2 months training of teachers, parents and children, in how to prevent disease and why sanitation and hygiene is necessary to improve their lives.

Long-Term Impact

$5,000 will provide sanitation and clean water for 300 children, and directly impact young girls. Our past projects have seen girls attendance rates in schools increase from 61% to 92% within 6 months of a WASH project. The water well will last up to 20 years with our sustainable model, and the sanitation structure will last up to 10+ years. We believe in sustainability and empowering people to improve their own lives. Our long-term impact potential is great, greatly increasing life expectancies
