This project will help provide 7-10 full scholarships to children of California Highway Patrol officers killed in the line of duty. These scholarships cover all expenses at any university/state or junior college in the nation for one academic year. Without our support they would not be able to afford a college education. We consider it an honor and a privilege to provide these scholarships to families who have sacrificed so much for us.
Each year we receive over a 1,000 applications for scholarship assistance from children of CHP officers, many of who are not be able to attend college without our support. Currently, there are approximately $1.4 trillion in outstanding student loans in the U.S. and nearly 40% of college funding for low income families comes from grants and scholarships. With 60% or more of our applicants at or below 80% of median California income, it is impossible to get a college education without our help.
Many of these students have all the potential, but lack resources and the opportunities to complete college. For this reason, the scholarship program encompasses the largest distribution of money from the CHP 11-99 Foundation. In recognition of their profound and permanent loss, we provide full scholarships to students whose parent is killed in the line of duty. We have awarded over $34M in scholarships since 1984 and in 2019 we provided $2.4M to 1171 students.
Scholarships transform students' lives. It is within your power to give a CHP officer's child the opportunity they deserve. A gift of any size can have an immediate impact for students. By contributing to scholarships, you lessen the need for loans and help reduce student debt. The student who receives a scholarship today returns the favor by becoming the scholarship donor of tomorrow. Your gift can establish a chain of philanthropy that extends far beyond your lifetime.
