The project will raise awareness on the Right of girls to have equal education opportunities. Mother Groups will act as Community structures to champion the change of bad cultural practices which promote child marriages and hinder girls from completing primary and secondary school. Girls for Girls Groups will be formed and trained in school to act as advocacy tool to gather evidence and a platform for girls to voice out their challenges pertaining to their Human Rights to formal education.
Girls from rural and poor households face the greatest barriers to school access and retention. Because 84 percent of Malawi's population lives in rural areas and 50.7 percent of the population lives in poverty, rural and poor girls constitute a significant portion of Malawi's school age population. Many rural vulnerable girls in Rumphi District drop out of school; they marry early, have many children, and spend their life time in poverty.
This project will contribute to implementation Gender Equality in education. It will lobby for Girls education Rights and abolish child marriages in Rumphi District. It will strive to mobilise the community members through mother groups within Traditional authorities Chikulamayembe and Mwankhunikila in Rumphi District to be agents of change and contribute to girl's education. Girls will be imparted with Advocacy skills to fight for their rights and voice out their concerns to duty bearers.
The project will lead to: 1.increased enrollment of girls by 40 %in Primary and secondary of Rumphi District by 2019 2. Reduced incidences of school dropout among adolescent girls by 40 % in primary schools by 2019 2. Increased community participation and involvement in advocating for girls education in Rumphi district
