Chitempha School is currently a state of total disrepair, meaning that students aren't getting the education they vitally need and deserve. SCALEAfrica has designed a new four-classroom building in rural Mfuwe, Zambia to serve 450 students. Through sustainable building practices and active community participation, our aim is to construct well-designed, effective classroom spaces for hundreds more children. We believe the best kind of social change begins at the root - with a seat in a classroom.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Education is a basic human right, yet there are millions of children in Zambia without access to effective education. At Chitempha School, the existing building is neglected and crumbling: the roof is leaking, the concrete floors are severely pitted, cracked and lifting, the roof framing is twisted and rotting, and bats are nesting in the open rafters. The classrooms are dark and poorly ventilated, making it impossible for the students to get the education they need to move out of deep poverty.

How will this project solve this problem?

SCALEAfrica has designed a new four-classroom building and a girls' sanitation block at Chitempha School in rural Mfuwe, Zambia to serve 450 students. The project also will include teacher's offices, store rooms, outdoor community spaces and the rehabilitation of two existing, crumbling classroom buildings on site. By providing well lit, properly ventilated classrooms and community space, students are better able to see, hear and focus on their lesson - a vital step toward effective education.

Potential Long Term Impact

Socially responsible design has the potential to change the seemingly static condition of poverty and illiteracy. We believe that the community-driven building process, the effective learning spaces that are developed, and the actions/connections that happen within those spaces are the key to sustainable social change for the whole community. We are building solutions that extend beyond the boundaries of the school itself - by taking design out into the world to those that need it most.
