Avigdor II explores his new sleeping quarters
Dear Sumatran tiger supporters,
We are so very happy to announce, after a long wait, the arrival of our new male tiger from Dublin Zoo!
Avigdor II is a 10 year old male who has been identified as a good genetic match for our female, Hannah. As you will have read in our previous reports, Hannah has had a number of cubs in the past but only one survived to adulthood. Successful breeding is critical for the survival of this species of which only around 400 remain.
Big cat introductions can be tricky. The animals at first get to smell each other, then they get to see each other through a barrier, and finally they are introduced out in the exhibit. Staff are always on standby with water hoses and noise makers to separate fighting animals if things get out of hand. However, in this case, our zoological team were very pleased with our pair, who, after an initial show of bravado, took to each other almost immediately. You can watch the video below to see the first time they met.
Thank you for your continued support during the long period that we have had to patiently await our new male’s arrival – and, welcome Avigdor II!!
