Save 250 Households in Uganda from Gut Perforation

by Ray of Hope Africa (RAHA)

Gut perforation disease is an easily preventable disease caused by drinking unsafe and contaminated water. It is claiming lives and affecting many households and communities. In a week, between 2 and 3 persons are operated on in Kasese district alone as a result of gut perforation disease, placing great financial burden on the victims. Our project will save lives by providing 500 households with "Solvatten", a Solar powered water purifier that provides safe drinking water and also hot water!

Kasese district has poor safe water coverage with most of the households using impure water from running rivers of Nyamugasana, Nyamwamba, Mubuku and Lubiriha that carry lots of minerals from Mount Rwenzori for domestic and commercial use. Since 2008, the disease has spread to all parts of the district with at least two people being operated daily,

Solvatten is a household water treatment unit. The portable 10 liter container is a patented and scientifically. Solvatten is put in a sunny place, taking 2-6 hours and thereafter, water is drinkable. An indicator shows when it is safe to drink. Solvatten can also be used as a solar water heater, providing hot water for cooking and hygiene.

Long-Term Impact

Solvatten provides safe and warm water. It is easy to use, saves time, money and firewood, and improves health and the environment.
