World Malaria Day Celebration in Hoops Care

By Claudius Thompson | Project Leader

Wold Malaria Day!

April 25th is celebrated as World Malaria Day. HCI organized three events to celebrate the day. The morning started with the distribution and hanging of insecticide treated bed nets to five new mothers in the Amanful Community who babies are less than one month old. These mothers had previously register for bed net when they were about six months pregnant. What was facinating is that they all give birth within days of each other. We are so glad that we have been following and educating them through out their pregnancy period. We are very committed to zero malaria related death among young babies in the Amanful Community, Cape Coast, Ghana. (video).

At noon we visited the Futures Academy school in Brofredu, Cape Coast for #MalariaMinute. Using each minute to teach the children on the facts about malaria. The HCI team went to each classroom block interacting on the children on malaria prevention. Most already knew the sign and symptoms of malaria but could not identify the type of mosquito which causes malaria and also what type of water they love to lay eggs. At the end of each section we could tell that they learnt something new. Malaria prevention posters and stickers were given out to deserving students who answered malaria related questions correctly. Climaxing the day was a 3on3 basketball tournament dubbed "Nights4Nets" emphasizing on the importance of sleeping under treated bed nets just as it is important in using a net when scoring a basketball. Defending champion from the 2012 edition successfully defended their title. Eight teams register with three coming from Takoradi in the Western Region(video). Kindly continue to support this initiative as it is really saving the lives of children here in Ghana.
