I am glad to inform you that our life saving malaria program has been extended to the Northern region of Ghana. Currently I am in Yong, a village located about one hour drive from the regional capital Tamale. It is a village with a little under 500 in population. Currently about 20 mothers has been identified with babies under three months who are not sleeping under treated bed nets. These mothers will each receive a bed net by the end of next week. There are cultural and customary norms which I have to adhear to as distribution continues. Please follow us on Facebook as the distribution and installation continues.
These mothers place cloth at the door mouth to stop mosquito from entering but which is not a good method. Other mothers spoken told said that they are awaiting the raining season which comes in three months time, by then there is a certain plant which grows that produce a scent offensive to mosquito. Some mothers said the plant smells bad and will not be using it.
In the past, the government did supply nets but they are currently worn out and discarded.
In the coming weeks a malaria awareness program will be carry out and additional nets distributed.
I am currently buying the nets by retail price which is very costly.
I am therefore appealing to current and new donors to help with substantial amount so that we can be able to reach out to many mothers like these in the surrounding villages.
I have three more months in the North and hope to extend most of our programs in these communities.
Lets join hands in reaching the mark of 1000 children!!!!!
