Save 1000 Children At Risk From Malaria in Ghana

by Hoops Care International
Vetted

Summary

Malaria is the leading cause of mortality in children under five years in Ghana. Hoops Care International is currently distributing over 400 insecticide-treated nets. We currently have children who are trained to educate their peers on the importance of malaria prevention. By educating children we are not only reaching out to those vulnerable to the disease but instituting measures and the medium by which children can learn and share innovative ideas on preventing malaria.

Challenge

According to the facts on Malaria in Ghana, 3.5 million people contract malaria every year. Approx. 20,000 children die from Malaria every year (25 per cent of the deaths of children under the age of five). Even if a child survives, the consequences from severe malaria such as convulsions or brain dysfunction can hamper long-term development and schooling. The annual economic burden of malaria is estimated 1-2 percent of the Gross Domestic Product in Ghana. We are hoping to save many children

Solution

Hoops Care International has currently inaugurated ten health clubs in basic schools in Cape Coast. The club which is name PROMOTING GOOD HEALTH AMONG CHILDREN (ProGHAC) currently has over 500 members spreading the message of preventing Malaria by sleeping under insecticide treated bed nets(ITN). The members are also on a door to door campaign educating, donating and installing ITN for children, mothers and expectant mothers. Children educating children on malaria is also a key to ending Malaria

Long-Term Impact

Since these clubs has been fused with their school activities, it will go a long way in the continue fight against Malaria in the community as members of these clubs will continue to identify children at risks and help them through education and providing ITN to sleep in. Mothers and expectant mothers in deprived communities will also benefit a lot as most of the members of these clubs live in similar environment. Over 5,000 children will benefit through the ProGHAC malaria education project.
