Wondering Eyes of Lucky

Dear Kind Hearts

Greetings from SANKALP team

Before presenting the progress report of November, 2013, we’re pleased to inform you that our project "SANKALP" has been approved for Microsoft’s YouthSpark initiative. This means that our project is eligible for participating in the YouthSpark’s Giving Tuesday campaign taking place on December 3rd starting at 12:00:01 PM (noon) ET (i.e. 22.30 in India).  Microsoft will be matching all donations to our project at 100%, with $250,000 up for grabs! This is a great opportunity for us to reach close to our target. The campaign will end as soon as matching funds run out. So PLEASE DONATE as much and as soon as possible from 12.00.01 noon on 3rd through Globalgivings’s website, so that we earn extra matching funds before they are taken away by other projects.

August to November is festival season in most parts of India. Children at SANKALP are also encouraged to celebrate all festivals at the centre to inculcate universal brotherhood and also to improve their social skills. Celebration started with the Independence Day on 15th August, then Parsi New Year “PATETI” on 18th August, Rakshabandhan on 20th August, “JANMASHTAMI” the birthday of deity “KRISHNA” on the 28th August and “GANAPATI” festival on 9th September.

These were followed by the birthday of the father of nation Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October. Nine nights of dancing to celebrate “NAVRATRI” began on 3rd November culminating on “DASHEHARA festival on 13th October. Centre was closed for 10 days after celebrating “DIWALI” & Gujarati New Year.

Dr. Surekha Ramchandran holding a PhD in cognitive deficit & depression in Down’s syndrome at University of Madras and who is the co-founder of Down’s syndrome Federation of India and the President elect of Down’s syndrome International, conducted a workshop on 17th November at KGP Children’s Hospital. This workshop was attended by the in-charge SANKALP and the parent of children suffering from Down’s syndrome. First half of the workshop was meant for the special educator and Dr. Surekha interacted with the educators and shared her knowledge & experience with them. Second half was a guidance & counseling session with parents during which she answered various doubts of parents and also gave them valuable nutritional and practical tips for handling/caring of their children at home. The workshop was good learning experience for special educators as well as parents.

SANKALP has also scheduled a parent counseling session on 8th December 2013. The purpose of this session is to provide professional guidance through our experts to the parents for handling/taking care of children at home, explain the Do’s & Don’ts and also to get feedback from the parents about their child’s progress.

Selected Success Story

Though improvement has been observed in all the children in varying degree at SANKALP, in this report we would like to tell you about the progress of a 7 year boy named Lucky. He suffers from mental retardation with speech impairment and also needs physiotherapy.

We are happy to inform that as per the observations of the team of SANKALP’s experts and the report of clinical psychologist, Lucky has shown considerable improvement in special education as well as in speech. His concentration span has improved and he has started taking interest in all activities also. His mental age has improved from 3 years 4 months to 3 years 10 months. Sustained training & rehabilitation under the guidance of professionally trained experts of SANKALP will definitely bring further improvement in his condition. This improvement is also noted by even his parents.

Let’s share what Lucky’s father says:
