We’re delighted to send this update as it’s our very first update on the Evacuation and Livelihoods centre here in the Philippines!
The centre will have two main purposes. The first will be to provide a safe place for 89 vulnerable families in the community to shelter during typhoons and floods. These are families who live on riverbanks and are extremely vulnerable to flooding.
Without this new evacuation centre, these families would be unlikely to find safe shelter during typhoons and floods. In the coming months, we’ll be introducing a few of these families to you right here on GlobalGiving, so stay tuned!
The second is to give local community group Buklod Tao a place to run its projects on a day-to-day basis.
Buklod Tao’s projects range from urban gardening to help vulnerable community members become more food secure to the construction of rescue boats to supporting sustainable livelihoods for local women. These varied projects all focus on creating a more resilient, sustainable community which can resist and recover from disaster.
Right now, all of Buklod Tao’s projects take place in improvised, informal structures! With your help, we’ll change that situation and move these projects into Buklod Tao’s new centre. At the same time, we’ll give 89 families a safe place to shelter during floods.
We’re just getting started on the evacuation centre, and we can’t wait to update you on progress in the coming months!
Thanks so much for all you’ve already given, and our warmest regards from the Philippines!
We're ready to pour the floor!
