Hello, or as they say over here in southwestern Uganda, Agandi!
Since our founding, PHP has had a strong partnership with Duke University and the DukeEngage program, which provides undergraduate students with funding to participate in an immersive eight-week summer civic engagement experiences throughout the world.
We are happy to be hosting 11 students from Duke this summer, ranging from first year's to Master's students. Along with two PHP staff members, a PHP high school intern, and a Duke coordinator, the team arrived in Uganda about two weeks ago and has been hard at work preparing for their various projects!
While our large safe motherhood project begins in September, the students are in charge of various "mini-projects" for their eight week internships with PHP and laying the foundation for the year to come:
- Adrienne, Max, and Stephanie are currently working on maternal health training materials in preparation for a maternal health education campaign, covering topics such as safe delivery strategies, prevention of malaria during pregnancy, nutrition, and family planning.
- Carrie and Joan are working on implementing PatientView, a field-based electronic medical records system developed by a US-based NGO called Medic Mobile.
- Helen and Katie are preparing for focus groups with men and women in the community surrounding issues of child health and water access.
- Mark and Genny are working on a sister project concerning rainwater harvesting and community organizing.
- Anastasia and Lisa are developing a survey to administer to traditional birth attendants in Kashongi, with the hopes of characterizing their practices and paving a path for partnership with PHP and the local government.
- Katherine is developing and piloting a safe motherhood survey to administer to pregnant women in health centers. Once this survey is developed, we will be able to rigorously evaluate our program.
