Rural quality of life for peace construction is a pilot model of intervention to improve living conditions of vulnerable rural communities towards social transformation and building a post-conflict peace in Colombia, through an integral and participatory intervention in the 180 inhabitants village of Vallecito in San Pablo, Bolivar. The next step of the innovative and replicable methodology consists in building the community center to strengthen social capital and active citizenship. Join us!
In the context of peace talks in Colombia, improve rural quality of life has become a key point to negotiate an end to the fifty years armed conflict. The landlocked village of Vallecito is characterized by extreme poverty due to the lack of public investment and continuous environmental disasters. Burned twice by paramilitary groups, its 40 families live from subsistence farming in precarious housing with no access to basic sanitation and little sense of belonging.
Servivienda launched in 2012 a pilot intervention in Vallecito, starting with a territorial diagnosis to generate coresponsible partnerships with public, private and community means. We already achieved its relocation in a non-risky land, the participatory construction of 40 houses with basic sanitation, a school, health and communication centers, strengthening community life and environmental good practices. Support the 181m2 community center to build identity, culture, memory and citizenship.
The participatory methodology has allowed the community to own the process and collectively build its new territory, with greater levels of trust, environmental consciousness and social control, asking the State to guarantee their rights and bearing their own responsibilities as citizens. The strong capacities built in the community and local authorities will allow highly sustainable impacts. Once the project over, Servivienda will spread the innovative model of intervention for replication.
