According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15% of the world consists of people with minor to major disabilities. If applied to Pakistan's population, people with disabilities (PWDs) might account for more than the entire population of Karachi and 3 times the population of New York City. In Pakistan, people with disabilities (PWDs) encounter numerous challenges in finding employment and assimilating in society due to widespread stigma, discrimination and a lack of legislative support.
The Rickshaw Project is an advocacy platform that works for the rights of people with disabilities through a dial-a-rickshaw service. Our hand-controlled rickshaws driven by people with disabilities tackle negative social perception about disability through its operations and advocacy efforts. This transformation in perception is also done through sensitization sessions for educational institutions, private sector and public sector organizations.
Our project will challenge/change negative social perceptions of disability - the root cause of discrimination -by providing a moving and functioning example of inclusion with PWDs taking the lead role. In two years, we aim to be a self-sustainable service model, sensitize 5000 individuals about disability, aim to recommend and push for legislative changes related to commercial licensing, and create a Research & Development Center for retrofitted vehicles.
