The Girl Scouts in our Beyond Bars Troop started the summer off right with a camping trip - one of the pillars of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

The girls spent the weekend at Camp Whippoorwhill, a 19-acre wooded site located on the Magothy River in Pasadena, MD. During the camp, Environmental Resources Management worked with the Girl Scouts on environmental science and conservation activities.Camp attendees also had the opportunity to canoe on the Magothy River.

Currently, Girl Scouts Beyond Bars is serving 33 girls. Over the past 25 years, more than 400 girls have been given the support they need as they cope with the loss of a parent and the isolation that comes from the stigma of their mothers’ involvement in the criminal justice system.

Your commitment to Girl Scouts Beyond Bars helps us ensure that ALL girls in central Maryland have the opportunity to be a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™.

To celebrate the 107th Birthday of Girl Scouts on March 12th, A Mighty Girl, the foremost website dedicated to raising smart, confident, and courageous girls, featured the Beyond Bars Program on their blog.

The article shared the history and impact of the program, which started in 1992 as a partnership between Girl Scouts of Central Maryland and the Maryland Correctional Institute for Women and has grown to 17 Girl Scout councils throughout the U.S.

We are also happy to announce that Girl Scouts of Central Maryland has been awarded a grant by Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. to fund a pilot program for girls in nontraditional settings. GSCM’s project will take Girl Scout programming to girls in juvenile detention.

For many people, including children with parents in prison, the holidays can be a rough time of year. In an effort to bring some holiday joy, singer John Legend and his organization, FreeAmerica, partnered with Build-A-Bear to provide gifts for some of these children, including 35 Girl Scouts from GSCM's Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (GSBB) program.

The bears were distributed to the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars troop members at the second of their bi-monthly meetings on December 15th at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women (MCIW).

In the card that comes with the bears, Legend says, “I hope you feel supported and loved this holiday season.”

On September 29, 2018, the mothers at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women looked on with pride as their daughters were invested and rededicated.

Girls who are new to the Beyond Bars Program were invested into the Girl Scout family for the first time and received their Girl Scout pins. The rededication was an opportunity for returning girls and adults to renew their commitment to the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

During the ceremony, girls received new uniforms and patches that they earned the previous year in skill areas such as STEM, outdoors, life skills, and entrepreneurship.

Currently, Girl Scouts Beyond Bars is serving 29 girls and 19 mothers. Over the past 25 years, more than 400 girls have been given the support they need as they cope with the loss of a parent and the isolation that comes from the stigma of their mothers’ involvement in the criminal justice system.

On April 20, 2018, mothers at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women hosted their Girl Scout daughters for the most anticipated event of the year – the annual Girl Scouts Beyond Bars sleepover.

This year, 25 girls spent the night with their mothers at the MCIW for a Hollywood-themed sleepover. Prior to the sleepover, the girls made paper “Walk of Fame” stars as decorations. The stars featured each girl’s name, hand outline, and something she does well.

Girls arrived at MCIW to find a red carpet featuring their “Walk of Fame” stars. The girls and mothers spent time painting Oscar statues, decorating t-shirts, sharing a meal, and most importantly, bonding in an overnight setting. This is the only opportunity for these Girl Scouts to spend time overnight with their mothers all year.

The MCIW warden allowed the GSBB staff to bring a camera into the prison to capture the sleepover. We hope you will find these photos heartwarming and hopeful.

Currently, Girl Scouts Beyond Bars is serving 32 girls and 20 mothers. Over the past 25 years, more than 400 girls have been given the support they need as they cope with the loss of a parent and the isolation that comes from the stigma of their mothers’ involvement in the criminal justice system.
