"DISCRIMINATION IN SOCIETY, THE REAL PROBLEM"- "DISCRIMINACION EN LA SOCIEDAD, EL VERDADERO PROBLEMA

(VER VERSION EN ESPAÑOL ABAJO)

On May 10th, Colombia became country number 100 to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This ratification commits our Government to take concrete actions to ensure equal rights and opportunities for people with disabilities.

In this regard, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said that "these states have acknowledged and agreed that a disabled person is not a problem that needs treatment - are ready to treat the real problem, discrimination in society."

FUNDOWN CARIBE in partnership with 45 countries,  participated in the making of the Global Video Event “LET US IN” by Down Syndrome International (DSI) for World Down Syndrome Day 2011 this 21st of March.

Thanks to your generous Support, we've received the funds required to start our 2011 Public Informative Campaign “Rethinking Down Syndrome in Colombia”.  As stated in our project, in August we´ll launch our campaign with the installation of two advertising billboards whose image and message is being designed, emphasizing on the rights of persons with Down Syndrome, which most of the time in Colombia face the real problem of disability: discrimination by our society.

Our objective is to break the false cultural perceptions  about persons with Down Syndrome, in our aim to reach inclusion in our community.
