On Sunday, December 30, 2018, our office -- affectionately monikered 'Rainbow House' -- was destroyed by a massive fire causing damage 90% of the building and its contents which value between $50,000 and $60,000. This has put a severe damper on our spirits and is a significant impediment on our operations. Rainbow House was a safe space where activities were hosted for LGBT Jamaicans to build community, discuss issues affecting the community and educate persons about laws and policies.
The fire at Rainbow House has put a severe damper on our spirits and is a significant impediment on our operations. While investigations are still ongoing, there is evidence that the severity of the fire means we have lost most of our files, equipment, furniture and other supplies (cumulatively 90% damage). The estimated loss from the fire is between USD$50,000 and USD $60,000.
To achieve some level of normalcy, to restore and rebuild operations, we will need to quickly recover what we have lost. A donation to this campaign will help us rebuild and continue our operations to ensure protection of the rights of LGBT people in Jamaica. Every donation will support the efforts and ensure that funds for critical programs and initiatives to improve the human rights situation for LGBT people in Jamaica do not have to be diverted in this regard.
