Summary

Beed district is facing acute scarcity of water and a drought like situation for the past 6 years as an impact of climate change in terms of drought and increasing costs of agriculture inputs have resulted in frustrations and even in suicides among farmers. Basically, the area is rain fed and monsoon plays a crucial role in farming. Soil water conservation measures are one of the important solutions & support livelihood. Some of the line and area treatments have been proven to be effective.

Challenge

The impact of climate change in terms of drought and increasing costs of agriculture inputs have resulted in frustrations and even in suicides among farmers in the Marathwada Region. From 1995 onwards Maharashtra has experienced thousand of suicides every year. In year 2016, 1130 farmers ended their lives with highest of 300 from Beed District. Most agricultural fields become dry, with no standing crops, look like barren land. Until recently, mostly poor people (like marginal farmers) migrated.

Solution

Soil water conservation measures are one of the important solutions to these problems. Some of the line and area treatments have been proven to be effective in drought mitigation. Off course, the impact of these activities is majorly dependent on rainy days vs. amount of rain during the monsoon. Different types of interventions can be proposed, like Desiltation, straightening and widening of streams, water absorption trenches (WAT), and widening of natural drainage line (Nala).& livelihood

Long-Term Impact

Long Term Impact: 1.Provision of safe drinking water round the year 2. Increased ground water by at least 2 - 3meters 3. Increased soil moisture 4. Reduce Migration 5. Facility of protective irrigation during long dry spells 6. Changed cropping pattern from single cropping to double cropping 7. Sufficient safe drinking water for the rural community round the year 8. Motivation of farmers towards secondary agriculture like dairy, poultry, goatary, etc. 9. Increased annual income of 10000 farmers.
