Coronavirus (COVID-19) Emergency Response
After first landing at Saga Airport on January 27 to Shanghai, China, ARROWS has now delivered 1.4 tons of relief supplies to medical facilities in Wuhan and Shanghai including more than 500,000 masks delivered just last week!
As of February 28, the number of infections has jumped from 4,389 to more than 80,000, and the situation continues to worsen. In Shanghai, almost all hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets are closed and there are only a few people riding the subway. The once international cosmopolitan city of 24 million people has now become empty. The local government in Shanghai had extended the Chinese New Year to February 9 with residents being strongly advised to avoid going outside to prevent further spread of infection.
At the medical facilities to which we have delivered supplies, some administrative staff did not have masks to wear…so hospital staff were very happy with the medical masks brought from Japan. Unfortunately, protective suits and masks are not reusable. Many doctors do not drink water in order to avoid bathroom breaks and to wear their protective gear for as long as possible. Medical professionals working day and night can be found taking power naps in their protective suits.
The virus is also negatively impacting the world economy. The stock market in China on January 31 was suspended and many economic activities including aviation, tourism, shopping, and real state have been disrupted. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Chinese government, there is no specific treatment against the coronavirus. At least for another few months, there may not be any significant change to the current situation. Peace Winds will continue to focus efforts and resources on preventing further infections, supporting vaccine development, and mapping out treatment plans to fight against the virus.
In the midst of hardship, your support is so important. Thanks in advance for your generous contribution!
