Residential learning breaks for UK young people

by UK Youth

Summary

Avon Tyrrell is a residential centre in the New Forest designed to help all young people regardless of ability, race, background, gender or sexuality experience non-formal learning and life changing challenges. By providing young people with disabilities or special needs additional instruction and support we are able to make sure that they are challenged in a supportive environment, with activities specifically adapted to suit their needs.

Challenge

Disadvantaged, disabled and special needs groups of young people, such as young carers often need extra support to take part in the activities many young people take for granted. UK Youth's residential centre Avon Tyrrell provides equal access facilities for young people of all abilities and supports wherever it can through bursaries those that cannot afford to take part. Participating in challenging educational activities in mixed background & ability groups enables them grow and learn.

Solution

These bursaries enable us to target financial 'top ups' where they will make the most impact, supporting disability groups, ensuring all members of disadvantaged groups can take advantage of the facilities and learn with their peers. These bursaries help pay for support staff for some young people or just make the difference in arranging and supporting travel or accommodation. Having a chance to feel participate equally in a group whilst learning new skills is a life changing experience.

Long-Term Impact

What is the long term impacts of giving a young carer a break from supporting their family or allowing a disabled young person to kayak or try a ropes challenge with their able bodied peers? For some these breaks are life changing, for some they are life saving, for others they are just the best holiday they ever had. We believe that the impact of young people to coming together in mixed ability groups & learning from each other is vital for social cohesion and mobility and self development.
