Since August 2014, IHUDAF has launched the maize project in the locality of Katsiru, area of Bwito, in Rutshuru Territory, East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in collaboration with the GlobalGiving Foundation. The project aimed to help women and girls mothers, victims of sexual violence to improve their self-management knowledge and their social and economic activities management. On March 7th, 2015, as usually, IHUDAF field team provided support to the beneficiaries during the harvest activities that lead to the production of 30 tons of maize on an area of 5 Ha.

During this season, the beneficiaries under the IHUDAF field Team supervision didn’t meet any major problems. The beneficiaries have been very active in all stages of the project from the labor activity till the harvest activity.

This project helped the beneficiaries to gather together on regular basis and to keep cohesion between themselves and the community. To sustain the action of self-support, the beneficiaries have decided to launch micro-projects in the form of revolving credit facility to allow each member to have a personal outside activity.

The impact of the project lies in the strengthening of community cohesion on the one hand and the economic self-sufficiency of women to defend their cause at community level on the other hand. After the harvest, the beneficiaries received a part of the production to meet their multiple needs such children's clothing, the payment of school fees for their children, etc. The other part of the production has served as seeds at the level of each household with the IHUDAF consultant support, an IHUDAF agronomist specialist.

There are no really actions to support the returned civilians such the implementation of sustainable development and auto support activities. The Katsiru corn pilot project, initiated by IHUDAF, is one of the answers to many concerns of the population in Katsiru zone. This project draws its substance in the IHUDAF 2012-2014 triennial action plan that aims to support the vulnerable groups by strengthening the capacities of auto support in the context of food sovereignty of vulnerable people with sustained attention to widows and single mothers, victims of this murderous war over two decades.

According to IHUDAF field Officer, the cultural mi-season has arrived. During his last visit, he was able to meet with the pilot project committee of Katsiru.  These leaders (widows women and single young mothers) were happy with the results of their work.  During the meeting, they expressed their gratitude to IHUDAF and of course, to GlobalGiving for giving them the opportunity to start a new life after 20 years of deadly war in the area. Let us share the attached pictures to help you be more close to the reality.

Through August 18 to August 21, 2014, the IHUDAF Chairman of the Board of Directors from Kinshasa, Fidele Kaboyi Munyakazi conducted a trip mission in Katsiru area, community of Bwito, Rutshuru Territory, North-Kivu Province. Accompanied by the IHUDAF Executive Secretary, Boniface Nkera Rutebuka, they have been able to launch agricultural activities through the corn pilot project on an area of 5 hectares. The project aims to help and empower 115 widows women and 35 young single mothers.

Once arrived in Katsiru, the Chairman of the Board of Directors has held an important awareness session with the Nyanzale Antenna leaders who oversee agricultural activities throughout the Bwito community and Government local civil and military authorities.

After the meeting, accompanied by beneficiaries (the first group of 50 people) and the Nyanzale team supervision, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and the Executive Secretary attended the measurement of the leased land carried out by a specialist, a designated agronomist on August 19, 2014 at 2kms far away from Katsiru Centre.

According to the specialist agronomist and the beneficiaries, the field is of good quality and is located in a more secure place; an expression of joy and hope for the beginning of new life for them after 20 years of destructive and deadly war.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors has also identified and paid the place where will be built the IHUDAF Katsiru Office and the secure storage of corn products.

Finally, the IHUDAF Chairman of the Board of Directors sent a thankful message to the people involved in this project and launched an invitation to participate actively fully in activities related to this project. The success and improvement of your daily life only depend on your determination to get involved.

As from 06/22 to 06/28/2014, IHUDAF team performed a service mission in our Katsiru pilot project to meet beneficiaries and prepare all the requirements to launch the first phase of the project.

With the help of local authorities, the team has been able to update beneficiaries’ database.  During this trip mission, 150 raped widows women and single mothers along with their dependents were identified and registered. The first group of 50 beneficiaries has been identified and designed to manage the first phase of pilot project of maize in Katsiru.

In addition, the team has been able to locate and identify a field of 5 ha to rent for these activities.  With all the beneficiaries and the local authorities, a visit on the field area was made to confirm the limitation of the rent area.  This visit was highly recommended and important as this region has had history of land conflicts.

Finally, IHUDAF team decided to organize awareness session to beneficiaries and local population regarding these activities; an interesting opportunity that helped to answer some of their preoccupations and their wishes on the one hand, and an occasion for our team to call for their full collaboration and explain how and why the outcomes depend on their commitment on the other hand. No doubt, this trip raises hope for an improvement of their daily lives as a united community.
