Our Mobile veterinary unit in Similipal Tiger Reserve recently rescued an Indian Rock Python (Schedule-I species under India’s Wildlife Protection Act, 1972) from a fishing net in a village near Baldiha Dam under Pithabata Range in the state of Odisha.
It is a common occurrence in Odisha, as the locals place fishing nets near their homes to keep snakes and other pests from entering. Many snake species like cobra, viper, python fall prey to such traps which often causes grievous injuries and fatalities. As per record, five cases of Indian Rock Pythons trapped in nets were recorded in the last two years.
On inspection, the team found injury marks on the rescued python. The veterinarian provided treatment and kept it under observation for few days in our Pithabarha rescue centre. Once the python recovered, it was micro chipped and released back into the wild, near the rescue site.
