Despite the global energy crisis, we, in developed countries take for granted having light at the flick of a switch. Not so in the developing world where 2 billion people don't have access to electricity, which is often a per-requisite for escaping poverty. In the absence of grid electricity, off-grid renewable energy solutions are needed; and to date off-grid solutions using solar or wind technology have proven to be too costly and unreliable for those earning less than $1-2 a day.
Nuru Energy has created a unique off-grid recharging platform, the POWERCycle that uses human power to recharge 5 of Nuru Energy's portable LED Lights together, in just 20 minutes! The technology is being spread via a network of rural energy kiosks operated by female entrepreneurs, who sell Nuru Lights and then provide recharging services for a small fee, earning in an hour, what they earned in a day before, while providing a clean, safe alternative to kerosene that is 5x cheaper for households
Job creation: 20 kiosks will provide skill development and sustainable livelihood for 60 female entrepreneurs and their families. Improved health and safety: By reducing kerosene consumption, which is the leading cause of fires and burns & causes respiratory disease accounting for up to 1/4 of child deaths in rural India. Increased disposable income: Savings accrued from no longer purchasing kerosene are estimated at $37,500 for the targeted 3,000 households in the first year alone.
