Cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh's Sundarbans (mangrove) coast killing 3,500. Livelihood security of mangroves dependant communities requires fishing nets, boats, small business and mangrove restoration.

Challenge

Bangladesh is the most vulnerable country facing the risks of rising sea levels caused by global climate change. Sundarban stakeholders have lost their nets, boats and gear. There is a lack of government or NGO support for the disadvantaged coastal communities draws attention for the project need. 300 are direct beneficiaries and 46, 434 are indirect beneficiaries. Shyamnagar Upazilla under Satkhira District of Bangladesh is the project site.

Solution

Mobilization of Sundarban stakeholder group/society, training, net/boat/gear/Boat License/pass-permit support, Small business creation, Disaster Risk Reduction, Mangrove regeneration and plantation, Environment conservation, Public campaign awareness

Long-Term Impact

Ensure the long-term sustainability for livelihood security of Sidr affected Sundarbans stakeholders and reducing the risks associated with threats from natural disaster and Climate change adaptation. Enhanced awareness on Sundarbans conservation
