Rehabilitate 370 Prisoners in Trichy, India

by New Life

Dear Donors,

The inmates of the Special prison are eagerly and anxiously waiting now to get sponsors for their training. We require generous donors to continue this cause. Now the organisation has planned to give training on Kundan Jewellery production and Vermi-compost production to the inmates. Kundan Jewellery is the art of making jewels with gem stones. The women are fond of these jewellery as they are cheaper and it comes in vibrant colours that match their attire. Hence it is a profitable venture.

In the prison the raw material for producing vermi-compost is in abundance and is being wasted. Hence if vermi-compost production is taught to the inmates, they can use the compost for raising their kitchen garden.

The total amount required for giving a kundan jewellery making for a batch of 20 inmates will cost $920 and vermi compost production training to 20 will cost $520. And the training can be conducted in a batch of mininum of 20.  The amount of donation received this time for these two trainings will be used as a revolving fund, as once the trainees get the certification the fee will be reimbursed by an agency (we have signed the agreement). Hence the money you donate will support three inmates(minimum) in a year thus having multiple effects.

So dear donors, kindly continue supporting the project by donating and spreading words to your friends and relatives.

With regards

Thanks to the donors, 25 women in the Trichy Special Prison for Women were trained in Tailoring. With the kind and overwhelming support of donors like you, the training was started on January 11th, 2013, conducted for three months. It ended on 10th of April and the trainees are now eagerly waiting to receive their certificates.

The trainees are taught from the basic of pedaling the sewing machine, stitching a hand kerchief, petticoat, skirt, shimmies, blouse for girls and finally the blouse for women(it is the most wanted item by the trainees as they can stitch their own and it fetches more income). The trainees are asked to take up notes, draw the sketch, taught the proportion of measurements for each garment, do the cutting in paper, then asked to cut in cloth and then stitch.

The trainer Mrs. Rajapriya says that she is very happy to see the trainees turning up for the training sharp at 9 a.m. each day and there is no absentee so far. The trainees were very much interested in learning the making of the different garments. They are now happy to wear the blouses stitched by themselves.

Dear Donors,

You would be happy to know that the tailoring training for the inmates of the Special Prison for Women in Trichirappalli is started on the 11th of January 2013. Thanks to you dear donors who made it possible and supported this task of training the women.

The women who are attending the training will be trained in the basics of stiching, and will have an extensive training in cutting and stiching the blouses. Since the blouse is the dress item mostly worn by the women in Tamil Nadu, blouse stiching will fetch them a good income once they get out of the prison and start their small unit. A minimum of Rs.5000/- (100$) is enough to buy a good sewing machine. And by stiching a blouse one can get an income of $1 to 2 depending on the model of the blouse. The trainees are so excited to get trained in this income generating opportunity.

One of the trainee is imprisoned by the complaint of her sister in law under the domestic violence prevention act. The crime she committed was scolding her sister in law during an argument. She says that once she goes out of the prison, she will buy a machine and start stiching blouses of her neighbours. And I will regain my dignity she says.

Thank you dear donors for supporting these women. Kindly spread words about the work of New Life to your friends and relatives and help us help such women who are inside the prison for emotional outbursts.

With regards

Dear Donor,

Thank you for the support you provide to us continuously. We are happy to share with you the story of Jeyarani.

Jeyarani aged 49 is from a seashore village. Her husband used to doubt her always and beat her. Jeyarani had no children. She had no relatives to support her so she had to withstand her husband’s torture. One day her husband started beating her saying that she is not loyal to him and was very violent. Badly hurt Jeyarani was much upset and on the spurt of the moment thought that instead of living with this cruel man let her kill him. So she mixed poison in his food and gave him that food. He was killed. She was arrested for this and was imprisoned for 10 years.

New Life’s counselor met her in the prison and came to know about her. She narrated her story to the counselor and was sharing her worry about her future once she gets out of the prison. She is also feeling for her killing her husband. She was worried that once she gets out of the prison how she can run her life. She was counseled to undergo the livelihood training given by New Life.

New life conducted Candle making program in April 2012. The training included the curriculum of making candles of different sizes and shapes.  The trainees were introduced to the raw materials used, where to purchase the raw materials and market it. A hand on training was given to make candles.  She attended the training with utmost interest.  Jeyarani will be released soon and she says she will take up this as her livelihood option. She is confident of earning a minimum of Rs.100 per day. She is thankful to the donor who has sponsored her for the training and made her life secure and worthy living.

Lighting candles in the life of more women like Jeyarani is possible only through support from donors like you. Kindly spread words about what we do to your friends and relatives (you know them well) and support our work.

Thank you once again.
