Rehabilitation for The Visually Impaired in Taiwan

With your support, we have held many computer courses as we can. From Oct. to Dec. 2015, we have focused on two kinds of classes:

1. the NVDA one by one training:

    (learning how to use screen reader “NVDA”.)

2. computer group classes:

(help blind students learning how to operate computer by using NVDA screen reader and try to help them to find a job when the classes are over in end Oct.)

 

We have guided thevisually impairedto visitmonuments in Zhongshan district Taipei City. We visited the first place “TaipeiBrewery” on Sept.16,2015

The second place : Former USambassador's residence and Zhongshan Presbyterian Church on Oct.17,2015 The third place: Taipei Story House and Tsai Jui-yueh Dance Research Society on Nov.15,2015. Volunteers assisted the visually impaired in the manner touch the building, so that visually impaired people to hear, touch, and then understanding monumental buildings

 

We hold visually impaired essay contest is divided into adult group and youth group. Adult group had 14 winners while the youth group has 17 winners. The seventh Accessible Internet outreach and promotion awards ceremony was held on Dec.12, 2015. There are more than a hundred guests invited to join the event.

 

From Oct. to Dec., 2015, we finished recording three audiobooks in DAISY format as follows: 1.Historical Sites in Taipei 2.Historical Sites in Taipei 3.The nineteenth disability model Golden Eagle Award, It included 10 Golden Eagle Award winners who are outstanding handicapped friends. These audiobooks will be given to the visually impaired people free of charge.

 

In Oct. 2015, we invited Professor Huang to share his life story. He is a blind professor working in National Hsinchu University of Education Department of Special Education. He lost his eyesight when he was 13 years old. Many visually impaired people came here to learn Professor’s real life experiences and made discussion with him. For those who are unable to come to our conference room, they can use “Skype” to join the seminar as well.

 

Besides, we offer psychology counseling services. Firstly, our social workers talk over the visually impaired face to face and learn to know their real needs. Secondly, we will find licensed counselors to arrange therapy. After the therapy, we expect them to recover their mental health gradually.

 

Maintain and Enlarge the TDTB DAISY Library continuously.

 

This Online library is constructed in 2010, and all the visually impaired people are welcome to be our members from then.

 

At present, our TDTB library has over 491 members and provides over 5016 DAISY books.

  1. the classes for teachers and parents:

(how to assist correctly for the visually impaired students)

drive, google calendar, you tube, and google search)

 

From July to Sept., 2015, we finished recording four audiobooks in DAISY format, details as follows: 1.Gettingmonuments 2. Jaschaaset ofessays 3. Slow CityTaipei 4. ArtsWalkin the south

The topics of these four books describe Taiwanese Literature and the Introduction of Taipei historical sites. These audiobooks will be given to the visually impaired people free of charge.

 

In August 2015, we hold a seminar called “sharing life experiences ”. Dr. Su was invited to share his life story. He is a famous psychiatrist and has worked in Taipei City Hospital for 16 years. He lost his eyesight because of a traffic accident when he was abt. 23 years old. Many visually impaired people came here to meet Dr. Su.

They were glad to share Dr. Su’s real life experiences and made lively discussion with him. For those who are unable to come to our conference room, they can use “Skype” to join the seminar as well. 1.the NVDA one by one training (learning how to use screen reader “NVDA”).

2.Reading group classes (help blind students learning how to write an article and how to express the thought of the books in the class).

3. the classes for teachers and parents (how to aid visually impaired students).

From March to June, we finished recording four books in DAISY format.  The topics of these four books describe Taiwanese Literature and Taiwan Historical Location Introduction.  These books will be given to visually impaired people free of charge.

From March, we hold a seminar called “sharing life experiences ”  We invited many visually impaired people to share their valuable life experiences. For those who are unable to come to our conference room, they can use “Skype” to join the seminar, too.  Topics of sharing life experiences are abundant, such as investing, exercising, traveling and even learning English…etc.  We also provide psychology counseling services. Our social workers talk to the visually impaired one by one and learn to know their real needs.  Next step, we look for professional counselors to do remedy and try to recover their mental health.

Maintain and Enlarge the Taiwan DAISY Library continuously. 

This Online library is constructed in 2010, and visually impaired person is welcome to be a member from that time. 

The library now has over 479 members and provides over 4500 DAISY books. (June 2015)

Computer Training Courses

With your support, we have held as many computer courses as we can.  This new coming year, we have focused on three kinds of classes:

1.the NVDA group classes (about how to use screen reader.).

2.iPhone/pad and Android group training courses during January.

3.we have one to one classes for those have particular needs.  The content of class includes basic computer information, keyboard lessons, music editing software (such as Gold Wave, My studio PC), Microsoft Office (WORD, PowerPoint) and Youtube (search and download), blogs and surfing the internet.

 

Maintain and Enlarge the Taiwan DAISY Library continually. 

This Online library is constructed in 2010, and visually impaired people could join to be a membership from that time. 

This library has over 449 members and over 4249 DAISY books till now (2015 March.).

TDTB not only provides DAISY books but also provides computer training courses, which make this library accessible for visually impaired people. 

This year, With your help, TDTB will continually make good DAISY books for the visually impaired.  And the dream of reading without barriers for the visually impaired can be realized in the future.

 

Recording and Production of Digital Talking Books

From January to February, we continued recording books in DAISY format.  One book are finished and one book is under recording.  All books are produced in DAISY format.  These DAISY books are free to visually impaired people.  With your financial support, we can continually record more audio books and produce e-books in DAISY format.  In modern time, DAISY format is the best way to read and the best way to publish for the visually impaired (According to the DAISY consortium).  

TDTB will continue recruiting volunteers to record daisy digital talking books and touching articles. The section of good article is called “Garden of Heart” on our website.

Literature seminars

This year, TDTB provides a new service: free literature seminars.  From July to September, TDTB hold eight literature seminars for visually impaired people.  The speakers are professors from department of Chinese literature in different colleges.  So they are professional enough to deliver the speech.  The topics are interesting, too.  Topics are about how to write a novel, how to write a poem, how to write an essay, how to appreciate different literature, how to make rhymes and rhetoric.  These speech topics are rare to visually impaired people.  Therefore, they love to attend literature seminars.  There were 160 people totally attending these eight seminars.  TDTB wished that we can hold more literature seminars in the future.

Recording and Production of Digital Talking Books

From September to November, we finished recording four books in DAISY format.  The topics of four books are about Taiwanese Literature.  These four books are made in DAISY format and will be given to visually impaired people for free.  Besides there is a section on TDTB’s website called “DAISY Library”.  Every month, we produce about 80~90 e-books in DAISY format and put them on the website.  This DAISY Library has over 360 members and over 3500 DAISY books till now (2014 November.)  All DAISY books (audio or text only) are free to visually impaired people.  With your financial support, we can continually record digital audio books and produce e-books in DAISY format. 

What is digital DAISY format?  DAISY format is an international format for making digital talking books.  According to the DAISY consortium, DAISY format is the best way to read and the best way to publish for the visually impaired. 

TDTB made DAISY books and web broadcasting programs especially for visually impaired people, and we will teach them how to read these books with free classes.  The website of web radio programs is: http://www.tdtb.org/information_2.aspx. The broadcasting programs are about useful topics of English learning, Health, Travelling, Book reviews and Interviews.  In the future, we will continue recruiting volunteers to record daisy digital talking books and touching articles.  The section of good article is called “Garden of Heart” on our website.  We hope that there will be more radio programs if TDTB can raise more funds. 

Computer Training Courses

With your support, we have held as free computer courses for the visually impaired.  TDTB provides different classes according to their needs.  For those who need computer training, TDTB provides NVDA classes (about how to use screen reader “NVDA”). For those students, we provide the writing classes to learn how to write an article.  And for teachers and parents, we teach them how to aid visually impaired students.  The content of class includes basic computer information/operation, keyboard lessons, iPhone and Android (most popular topic!), sound editing software (such as Goldwave, My studio PC), Microsoft Office (WORD, PowerPoint) and Youtube (search and download), blogs and surfing the internet.  The most important of all, our computer teachers are visually impaired people.  They learned from our vocational training course; and when they finished this course, they are capable of teaching other visually impaired people.  In 2013, there were 105 people use the project to learn more than 2000 hours of free computer classes.  We also planned new classes in the future such as literature classes.  With your help, we can hold more and more new classes.
