Rehabilitation session
Rehabilitation session

Are passed three years from how much Marina has proposed to support ten disabled children met during the medical visits to people affected by AIDS in the villages of the district of Mangochi with the volunteers of the group Tiyende Pamodzi.

But when we have decided to start the project “Let’s walk together”, we could not imagine what would have happened later: day after day the number of children that asked support is drastically increased and from the first visits in huts with ten children, today the physiotherapist Gift holds rehabilitation’s sessions in a gym equipped with a fixed wooden ladder, a handrail, big balls, a swing and numerous mattresses to maintain the balance and to correctly develop the exercises. We have succeeded besides in giving wheelchairs and other walking aids that have changed the life of many children.

But the most exciting surprise has been the local community ‘s answer: beginning from Fatima, many mothers, that have followed the program of rehabilitation of her children hospitalized by the to the Center Feed the Children of Blantyre, in solidarity has begun to show how much learned to the other women in the village.

The word-of-mouth has had an extraordinary effect: today 21 adults and 246 children are involved in the project tand participate in the sessions of physiotherapy. If before the disability was hidden and considered motive for shame, now is recognized by the community and mothers with disabled children share the difficulties, reciprocally helping and exchanging suggestions to address this fragility.

Thanks to your support we can say with great satisfaction to have reached our objective and to be able to hold concluded the project: Lucy, Patuma, Dorine, Cliff are alone some of many children that have improved their condition of life, going out of the obscurity of huts and finding again the smile and the hope for future. We are certain that Marina, Gift and group Tiyende Pamodzi will bring forth their jewel help with the passion and the determination that countersign them and they will keep on holding adjourned us on the progress and on possible necessities of the villages.

A thanks of heart to all of you that you have believed in this project and that you have contributed to color the life of many disabled children in Malawi.

Visits and exercises of rehabilitation

Our President Elena and a group of Aleimar friends have just come back from an exciting trip to Malawi and here's the latest news on the project "Let's walk together"!

There are currently about 200 children who, with their mothers or other members of the family, regularly attend rehabilitation sessions in the equipped gym of Namwera village and recently the support has also been extended to some children from Mozambique. Namwera is just 15 minutes from the border with Mozambique and some volunteers, with the physiotherapist Gift, go to the nearby state to visit disabled children and teach some easy family rehabilitation exercises.
During their stay in the Mangochi district, our Malawi group had a chance to meet Marina and took part in a rehabilitation meeting and subsequent distribution of rice and flour, staying surprised and fascinated by how the Marina, Gift and all the volunteers work with love and devotion.
Gift is the real point of reference, and even in the absence of Marina, it deals with everything: from visits, to diagnosis, to the personal rehabilitation program, approaching mothers of children in a simple and patient way and following the children with great care and affection. Due to widespread illiteracy, many women have difficulty in understanding and, just because of this difficulty, Gift is available to accompany them to the hospital even when their children have no motor problems but other issues.

Finally, here are the words of Dora, who has lived this intense experience in Malawi:

"It was exciting to see children like Lucy or Patuma socializing and spending time outdoors; until a few months ago they lived every hour of the day in the hut without being able to move. We also met Fatima, one of the first mothers who in absolute spontaneity had pulled a blanket on the ground and taught to other women in the village the exercises he had learned during the hospitalization of her daughter Dorin to the Feed the Children Rehabilitation Center in Blantyre. Since then, Fatima is part of the Tiyende Pamodzi Group and, thanks to an economic contribution for her work as diurnal keeper of the hall of the Group, has also managed to build a worthy home for her and little Doreen, thus achieving a personal ransom.
The smile and the strength of these children and families have filled indeed us the heart of happiness and we want to thank all those who supported the project and that even with a little donation allow us to improve the lives of many disabled children".

STEP BY STEP

Our Angela, Malawi project leader, updates us with good news on the project: in the small gym were built a fixed wooden ladder and a handrail to ensure that children with difficulty walking can begin their first steps.

A few days ago, have arrived the tools for the children’s rehabilitation exercises: wooden rocking horses, big balloons, a swing for exercising to maintain the balance and numerous mattresses on which children can do their exercises on a soft floor rather than being laid above their typical chitenje.

To September we will send a container with two cycles and 15 tubular coloured pillows that our children can use during their exercises as indicated by the physiotherapist.

With this little gym, the children are doing their job more joyfully and despite the sacrifices they begin to see the first results and to believe in a change!

Last Saturday, during the annual assembly of our association, the Italian volunteer nurse Marina has brought an exciting testimony of her work in Malawi and new good news on the our project.

The Tiyende Pamodzi Group is more autonomous and independent: following the advice of local physiotherapist Gift, volunteers assist disabled children in their rehabilitation and are available to work in the camps for the most disadvantaged families.

Sharing and mutual help are the magic elements of the group: from the impressive words of Marina, it is amazing the strength and the desire to provide support and affection of who in turn received a hand!

Thanks to your support, a small GYM near the Namwera village has been set up: here, even children who can not go to Mangochi Hospital can use the equipment for their exercises, such as gym balls, parallels and mattresses .

We have already achieved so much, but much can be achieved! Together, we can continue to support the incredible work of Marina and his group and send new special aids to our little big warriors.

As our director Daniele Saibene returns from Malawi, pleasant news return with him!

Daniele and his delegation have been visiting the Mangochi region for one week, to check out how things were progressing and to consult the local physiotherapist Gift and the Italian volunteer nurse Marina.

As they were there, they could feel a change. Gift isn’t, in fact, the only local volunteer; many others have joined him in his mission! Indeed, 30 volunteers are currently participating to the training course to become physiotherapist help, so that the families who can’t leave their homes and drive or walk all the way to the Tiyende Pamodzi operative center, can be assisted in another way. Gift, whose work is passionate and whose actions are guided by a sincere willing to help, isn’t able to work with more than 20 patients a day, so that the assistance of the local volunteers has become an essential resource.

But those 30 volunteers aren’t the only ones who are offering help! As a matter of fact, the mothers of those children who have been lucky enough to get already a treatment, are sharing their knowledge, offering their help and affection. Mothers who first were ashamed to have disabled children, are now the force to continue and to grow.

Furthermore, a new project is starting to see light. Marina and Gift are starting to put everything in place so that the GYM can be fully equipped for the treatments, and new materials can be lend to the families who work with their children from home.

Together, we have already reached so much, but much more can still be achieved if we all believe in it and work for it! Let’s do it, for the children, for the mothers, for Namwera, for Magochi, for Malawi!
