The learning conditions in Kenya's Kangemi slum are far comparable to other places in the city. Although school fees were officially abolished in Kenya, the schools nevertheless charge fees for school materials, school uniforms, lunch for students or even furniture. Poverty-stricken families cannot afford to send their children to school. They are forced to send them into the streets to beg, or worse some engage in crime activities or even prostitution to fend for themselves.

Education is key for these orphans and vulnerable children in Kangemi to come out of poverty. St Joseph Development Programmes provides education support is rooted in Ignatian pedagogy of taking care of individual needs. The beneficiaries have access to quality education opportunities, families supported to care for their children to live a dignified humane existence. Children need to live as children.

Long-Term Impact

Being a slum area, beneficiaries receive a good quality education with computer literacy and holistic development, which would enable them to realize their full potential. The knowledge acquired will lift them and their families out of the vicious cycle of poverty and enable them become more confident & educated children in the society.
