According to UNICEF, in the conflict zone of Eastern Ukraine, more than 40% of Pregnant /Lactating Women are suffering from anemia and lack of folic acid due to a poor quality of food and a bad medical following. AICM had a similar project in Feb 2017 for 1600 women, with a significant decrease of 50% of hemorrhages, miscarriages, premature infant. and healthy newborns. The Medical Foundation AICM propose to provide supplemental vitamins to 3500 women located in the conflict zone of Ukraine.
Pregnant and lactating women are not correctly followed by the local Doctors because the health facilities have a lot of problems. 135 hospitals are in reconstruction, and the average wage is less than 80$ for the people living in these territories affected by the conflict. This region has still a lot of young and fertile families because of the heavy industries continuing to work in spite of the war. But the quality of food and the access to medicines is a problem for pregnant/lactating women
Since 2004, the Medical Foundation AICM is working to improve the medical care in Ukraine. Since the start of the war, we are more in "life-saving" mode. We helped 80 hospitals with medicines and medical equipment, but the problem for Pregnant and Lactating Women remains a challenge. We had the first experience in Feb 2017 with the distribution through the local Doctors of vitamin supplement (manufactured in the UK) with a 50% decrease of pregnancy problems and babies development.
With this help, 3500 women and newborns will have a better future and this will also save many lives by the decrease of miscarriages, hemorrhages, and problems for newborns development (brain and bones).
