Over 4 million people are affected by food poverty in the UK yet millions of tonnes of perfectly edible food go to waste each year. At FoodCycle we think this is ridiculous - and we're doing something about it.
We run 16 community projects across the UK where we combine surplus food and the energy of our volunteers to create tasty nutritious three-course meals for people at risk from food poverty and social isolation. We've served 35,000 meals so far - now it's time for YOU to help out!
In the UK, 4 million people are affected by food poverty because of a lack of income, access, or knowledge about healthy, nutritious food. However, we throw away huge amounts of perfectly edible food every day.
Meanwhile, there are 1.2 million young unemployed people who could benefit from rewarding volunteering opportunities which would help them to develop skills and confidence to go on to employment.
At FoodCycle, we provide nutritious three-course meals from surplus food which would otherwise have gone to waste. This makes use of resources which already exist in the community, redirecting surplus food to those who need it. Since May 2009 we have served over 35,000 meals, made out of 29,000kg of surplus food by over 1000 volunteers who have given 25,000 hours of their time!
No-one should go hungry in the UK when so much good food is wasted. We want communities to come together - tackling food poverty and social isolation by using resources that already exist in every community.
We need your help to do this!
