Rebuilding Communities and Livelihoods in Japan

by Peace Winds America

The Tohoku economy in Northeast Japan depends on the local fishing industry, devastated by the March 2011 tsunami. Peace Winds America is providing economic revitalization and community support programs in local communities. We work with local partners and are committed to long-term recovery. We are also providing food, water, and shelter to displaced victims of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes.

The March 2011 tsunami in Japan devastated the Tohoku regional fishing industry. Families lost homes, sheds, boats, and equipment. Many families live in small temporary housing units, and still need outside assistance to rejoin the industry and support for devastated communities. In Kumamoto, citizens require shelter until permanent housing is provided to replace what was lost in the earthquake.

PWA is focusing on ways of empowering individual fishing families and their fishing cooperatives through local partners. We are providing equipment and storage space and new community centers. We are also working closely with the Tohoku ports, fishing cooperatives, and local NGOs with the goal of addressing the specific barriers to reentering the fishing industry. In Kumamoto we are providing shelters and the goods needed for displaced victims.

Long-Term Impact

The Tohoku region depends on the recovery of the fishing industry. Through support to fishing families and cooperatives, PWA is restoring livelihoods and revitalizing local economies. How and whether the small coastal towns devastated by the tsunami rebuild is dependent on the extent to which their local economies can recover. In Kumamoto, stable housing will allow displaced victims to rejoin the labor force quickly.
