In mid-July the world watched in horror as looters in KZN and Gauteng, South Africa, destroyed shops, businesses and properties, taking whatever they wanted, burning stock and making it impossible for many businesses, big and small, to do business. In partnership with AlexBiz, a network of small businesses in Alexandra - one of the hardest-hit areas in Gauteng - Rays of Hope is helping to get those businesses that are now struggling back on their feet.
Small businesses form a big part of the township economy, so the small businesses in Alex provided income for many families - both directly and indirectly. By destroying their equipment, stock and properties, these businesses can't operate and generate income.
In partnership with AlexBiz, Rays of Hope will work with up to 100 small business owners to assess their needs and partner with them to buy the equipment and stock that they need to get back to operating as well as they were before, or even better. Where possible, we will also find mentors for these small businesses to move them to the next level.
Getting small businesses back on their feet ensures that the families that are supported by those businesses are able to live well, get educated and provide for their community. If the businesses can be positioned for growth, then this will provide more jobs and the impact will be exponential.
