Real Talk is a new and innovative mobile app that uses real stories from real teens to help teens ages 13-15 learn about puberty, bullying, healthy relationships, and other relevant sexual health topics. This project will bring Real Talk to teens in 3 states with the highest teen pregnancy rates in the nation, delivering relatable and credible health information to teens who need it most while giving us insight on how to better reach and impact areas with the highest rates of teen pregnancy.
Teen pregnancy puts teen mothers and infants at risk for many negative health and social outcomes. Only 40% of teen mothers have a high school diploma and only 2% of them earn a college degree by age 30. Only 39 out of 50 US states require schools to teach comprehensive, medically-accurate sex ed. This project will provide access to high-quality, relatable sexual health info to 1000 teens in states with the highest teen pregnancy rates & do not require medically accurate sex ed in schools.
Real Talk is a mobile app that shares real stories written by real teens about puberty, bullying, and relationships via an Instagram-like feed. The stories align with the National Sexuality Education Standards, illustrate positive health decision-making, and link teens to other high quality resources like Sex, Etc. and Amaze.org. Teens have the ability to read stories, search for stories on different topics, and submit their own stories in the mobile app.
We will bring high-quality, relatable, and relevant sex ed information to 1000 teens in three states with among the highest teen pregnancy rates and the least access to medically accurate sex ed in school. Access to this resource will allow us to impact health outcomes earlier through primary prevention before teens become sexually active, thereby reducing health disparities.
