READ to RISE works with 45 primary schools in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, South Africa, to get children excited about reading. We believe that children who love read will excel at school and go on to become constructive members of society. It all starts with reading. We require a van to transport books and staff for our class programmes. We visit about 700 classes, do 130 school visits per year and give out almost 30,000 new story books to learners.
In South Africa, 78% of Grade 4 learners cannot read. Children are not inspired to read nor do they have access to story books. We have fun, interactive sessions to excite children to read. Each child receives a new story book to take home. The READ to RISE team visits primary schools in Mitchells Plain every day. A van is needed to help transport the staff and books in order for us to conduct our class programmes.
A van will help our 4 staff get to the schools to conduct the class programmes. We could also transport the books which we give to children. We give out on average 300 books per weekday. We often get volunteers who join us at schools to read - a van would be great so that we could transport our volunteers. We also have book covering sessions, a van would help us to transport the books and plastic. Inspired children lead to inspired adults, who will lead good lives and give back to the community.
About 14,000 children per year will benefit from our literacy programmes in Mitchells Plain. By giving children new story books to take home, it will strengthen the bonds between siblings, parents and grandparents. The community strengthens from book covering sessions and volunteers reading at schools. *Sponsors who contribute over R1000/$70 will be acknowledged on the van with their name/logo.
