The Music Department was treated with being able to host two very special concerts. The first was by the UCLA Gluck Brass Quintet in early April. They performed short pieces from classical as well as popular genres, and provided explanations in between pieces, covering their instruments and musical selections. Some interactive games also took place, such as the medley in which audience members recognized and guessed popular cartoon melodies. The second concert was a jazz concert in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month. Musical Director, Hitomi, and her quartet performed a set of original compositions as well as standards from the jazz repertoire. Brief comments on jazz history and idioms were provided between selections in addition to musical and instrumental explanations. The audience was invited to participate in a variety of ways including clapping rhythms and testing out electronic effects equipment.
Students continue to prepare for their upcoming recitals in several weeks. The UCLA recital date was switched to a week earlier than planned, pushing the Club recital date up a week as well, so students and teachers have been working hard with the new dates in mind. Piano students and their teachers have been focused on performing at the two upcoming recitals. Concert repertoire is being polished and students are practicing often. There is expected to be a larger number of piano students performing at this year’s Club recital and UCLA concert compared to last year’s.
