Breaking barriers: a creative haven for teen migrants

By Carolina Campuzano | Communicator

Since 2024, one of our goals at Casa Tres Patios has been to create "Las Chicharras": a communications agency for teenagers, especially Venezuelan migrants and residents of houses in precarious conditions, aged between 13 and 19. Nowdays, a group of young people are expressing their creativity by exploring various communication formats that allow them to amplify their voices and share their stories. This project has become a safe space for these youth to develop key 21st-century skills such as empathy, curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

One participant in this initiative is John, a 12-year-old in fifth grade who migrated from Venezuela to Medellín with his family. He is one of the faces behind the statistics: out of the 2,875,743 people who arrived in Colombia (as of August 2023), 503,682 were in irregular situations. When John first joined Las Chicharras, he was shy and had difficulty engaging with his peers, often preferring to stay apart and participate minimally in activities. However, as the workshops progressed, the facilitators (experienced in communication and education practices, along with a psychologist) noticed how he began to open up as the activities sparked his curiosity. Through exercises like storytelling for podcast creation and working with cameras to design a news segment, John became more engaged, particularly when involved in creating a logo for the emerging communications agency; he discovered his affinity for the audiovisual world.

At the end of the project's first three months, John not only became more participative and communicative but also developed better relationships with his peers, interacting with them openly and amicably. Although this is a specific case, it is not the only one that demonstrates the workshops' successes; as other participants have also made progress, benefiting the group as a whole. We've observed a decrease in the use of verbal and physical violence among the participants, who now exhibit better emotional and relational management. Furthermore, the implementation of communication skills has enabled the youth to work effectively in teams, without gender distinctions, enriching their collective processes.

Most importantly, these achievements are reflected in the enthusiasm and growing self-awareness the youth bring to the sessions. This project has been enriching, as participants begin to empower themselves, building confidence also with their peers. These advancements have not only contributed to the adolescents' personal development but have also provided them with tools to reflect on their contexts and realities, fostering a more critical and empathetic view of the world around them, and, above all, a more creative one, as they explore various forms of artistic expression in each session. In this context, our initiative continues with the aim of giving these young people a voice, enabling them to use different communication formats to broaden their perspectives and challenge negative stereotypes they may face, as well as address the economic and educational vulnerabilities they encounter. We are grateful to all our donors and partners for their support, which has been essential in creating a space where these young people can grow and reach their potential, overcoming the social and economic barriers they face.
