PROGRESS REPORT ON QUALITATIVE TRIBAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME IN KALAHANDI
Kalahandi district in Odisha is very much backward in India. The primitive tribal in M.Rampur block of Kalahandi as Kandha, Gonda, are very back ward in socially, educationally and financially. The droop out rate among the tribal are very high as their parents also uneducated and not for the present education. Considering this KARMI start the Qualitative Tribal Education Programme in area for the project KARMI started 5 Education Centres in 5 villages in 2 Gram Panchayats of M.Rampur block of Kalahandi District in Western part of Odisha in the most interior and underdeveloped where more than 70% of the people living having very small proportion of land property without productivity. People in total are very poor without good food, clothes and medicines. There are total 355 droop student but in the first phase only 115 students as boys and girls under age group 6-14 years are continue the centres who are used to migrate with their parents.
This project is to support Community based Accelerated Reading and Bridge Course Programme with a special focus on mainstreaming children at risk. The overall goal of the project is to provide mainstream education to 335 children at risk from 5 most migration prone village of M.Rampur block of Kalahandi district of Odisha who are going to be drop out due to migrants parents who are seasonally migrated to the metro cities in search of employment. The children need a friendly and accessible education environment at their village to check dropout and KARMI want to start 5 Alternative Education Centre in their own villages to provide quality education to cope with the other children. Presently KARMI continue the centres’ and bear all the expenditure from KARMI General fund and facing a lot of problems during the COVID period not continue the centres regularly as restricted by Government. Till maintained distance and sanitizers we continue the programme.
The Centres provides an introduction to reading and familiarity with numbers and instils a love of learning. In addition, the coaching program helps students from economically weaker sections of society to cope up with the school work and compete with students from affluent families who can afford private tuitions or have educated parents to help them with their school work. The programme also provide basic literacy, pre-primary up to middle school education, for girls through alternative education techniques. They have found that the curriculum taught in schools is often irrelevant to the lives of disadvantaged children. When parents don't see results, it is more likely that children will discontinue their education. The curriculum also included as per the standard and managed by the tribal dropout students. Present 125 students are learning in this centres’ and progress of the students also good.
