Education & Emergency Aid for 136 Girls At Risk

In many Villages of rural Kajiado District, an estimated 78% of girls and women from the indigenous Maasai Tribe have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and are forced to marry early to uphold their culture. The community has one of the highest rates of FGM among women aged 9-49 years. The program provides School fees and Education materials for 136 girls including emergency health support, counselling and family reconciliation for girls escaping from FGM and forced marriages.
total goal

In the Maasai Community(an indigenous tribe in Kenya), Female Genital Mutilation and Early/Force Marriages of young girls is ingrained in tradition. The community has one of the highest rates of cutting of women aged between 9-49 years in Kenya. The latest survey found that the Maasai Community has 79% of women undergoing the cut. Evidence points to FGM as a factor contributing to high levels of school drop outs among girls and high poverty levels in the Maasai Communities.

The goal of the program is to provide emergency assistance to girls in immediate risk through short term assistance through providing Literacy and Numeracy classes, counselling and family reintegration program to minimize the impact of their long absence from school. Through our family and school reintegration program, the project works to educate Families, communities on the health consequences of FGM and Early marriages. Through creating awareness more families are abandoning the practice.

Long-Term Impact

Improved educational opportunities for 136 girls at risk in the Maasai community ; Strengthened ability of 136 girls to make independent choices which will help them avoid negative copping behaviors ; Through provision of Literacy and Numeracy classes for the 136 girls, educational level of the girls will be increased enabling many to attain basic and secondary level learning and reducing the impact of long absence from schooling.
