Provide Real-World Skills to Southern MA Students

by Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts

Work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills are essential to young people as they make educational and career decisions. Trained, engaged corporate and community volunteers will partner with Junior Achievement to inspire more than 4,500 students throughout Southern Massachusetts during the 2014-15 academic year.

High school graduates are more likely to live productive lives and contribute to the well-being of their communities. Yet every day an estimated 7,000 students drop out of high school. In Southern MA, the dropout crisis has a devastating impact on the health of our economy. Young people who drop out are twice as likely as graduates to be unemployed and 3 times as likely to live in poverty. JA programs contribute to the vitality of communities and the availability of a well-educated workforce.

Junior Achivement programs help students connect the dots between what they're learning in school and how it relates to the "real world," empowering them to see value in their education and unlock their full potential. Students who are exposed to JA are better equipped to proactively manage their finances, understand the need for an entrepreneurial spirit, and develop skills that will be recognized and valuable in a global workforce.

Long-Term Impact

JA provides young people with the tools they'll need to make smart academic, financial and career decisions. Using postive role models from the community and hands-on activities that enhance the classroom experience, we help prepare students for the real world by teaching financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship skills. Our goal is to lower the dropout rate, increase economic literacy and emphasize the importance of education, especially with "at risk" youth.
