This project will help 2,000 students in Liberia start the school year with the supplies every child needs. Recipients will display academic excellence (with average grades of 90% and above) and are drawn from grades one to six. Students will be provided with a school bag, school supplies for the year, and a $20 USD stipend to purchase school uniforms.
Every child deserves access to quality education and the tools that unlock learning and self-expression. However, the reality in Liberia is that years of civil war left Liberia as one of the poorest countries in the world. The Ebola crisis of 2014 made matters worse and Liberia's education system was left in shambles. Most children do not have access to basic items like notebooks, pens, pencils, and backpacks, which acts as a barrier to their learning and development.
Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa's Book Bag Drive collects book bags full of school supplies and distributes them to thousands of children in Liberia. We also accept cash donations, which allows us to buy school supplies in bulk and to provide a uniform stipend to each of the Book Bag Drive recipients. This provides high achieving young people with the school supplies and school uniforms that they need to start the new school year with a mix of courage and pride.
In the five years that the Book Bag Drive project has been operating, we have seen that students are motivated to improve their academic performance throughout the year in order to be a Book Bag Drive recipient. Only students with average grades of 90% plus are eligible to participate, and we have seen students diligently improve their grades across the academic year so that they can be honored with a Book Bag the following summer. In 2019 we will provide 2000 students with Book Bags.
