Provide safe haven for 120 dogs & s/n

by Animal-Kind International
Vetted

Summary

Funds construction of 120 doghouses, which will be given to no/low income families in Luderitz, Namibia. It's so much more than just a doghouse project though! When Animal-Kind Int'l partner, Have A Heart, gives a family a doghouse, the family sees their dog has value. A doghouse is an entry: HAH then works w/the family to provide improved care, including s/n. The dog also gets a bag of food & blanket; & we support local entrepreneurs-doghouse builders. We will also fund s/n for 30 dogs!

Challenge

In Namibia, like in most other countries in Africa, dogs are left to roam, & are often not taken care of. When a family is given a dog house for their dog, they begin to see the dog has value. In Namibia, Have a Heart will run this program, & with local HAH reps in many of the towns, it's a great entry point to begin providing more services for dogs. 60 dog houses will be made in Namibia, & then this pilot program will expand to Malawi (w/LSPCA) & Uganda (w/USPCA), where problems are similar

Solution

In Namibia, during the day in winter, temperatures may reach a high of only about 25 degrees Centigrade. At night, at the coast, the mist comes in, and temperature can drop to around 12 degrees C. Everything gets wet, and dogs get damp and cold when forced to sleep in the open-as most are. Namibia is also known for its strong cold winds during the winter (up to 30 - 40 knots). Dog houses would change the lives of dogs so much and would help them to stay healthy and survive the winter!

Long-Term Impact

This is just the 1st step--providing 120 dog houses--in a chain of events that all starts with the house (& blanket & bag of food). HAH has seen the transformation before: a dog that's viewed as worthless gets a dog house; the owner--usually one of the children in the family--starts showing some interest; the child starts caring for the dog; the family agrees to s/n & vaccinate; the dog starts to look healthy, begins to hang around & protect the family; & they start feeding & caring for the dog.
