Supply a Health Clinic in Uganda

            Globemed at Northwestern had a very successful and exciting Spring Quarter! The quarter featured our Benefit Dinner—one of our biggest events for the Adonai Centre—as well as GlobeMed Summit, Windy City retreat, our Individual Giving Campaign, a new Executive Board and a Krispy Kreme fundraiser to end the year on a sweet note.

            This year, our Benefit Dinner (May 12^th) was unlike any other. We were fortunate to have Mr. Aloysious Luswata, the founder and director of the Adonai Centre as a speaker and guest. His story highlighting the beginning of Adonai inspired us all and gave many members a tangible connection to our partner in Uganda. We are grateful to have our GROW team work with Aloysious and the Adonai community this summer to improve and expand their health infrastructure. The Benefit Dinner also featured Professor Cynthia Salter from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Public Health as one of our speakers. Ms. Salter spoke about her work abroad working and teaching in the Global Health field. Bringing insightful comments, she spoke to GlobeMed's work in the larger global context and what we can do to be better students

            GlobeMed Summit was also a noteworthy event which occurred at the beginning of April. Hosted in Evanston itself, numerous members from GlobeMed chapters across the nation came together for a weekend of networking, leadership and public and global health justice and unity. Windy City Retreat which brought together the Loyola, Northwestern and University of Chicago GlobeMed chapters also occurred at the end of April. Many speakers at the event focused on their personal and academic experiences and the influence of GlobeMed on shaping them as social justice advocates and professionals. It was a great quarter for GlobeMed unity!

            Our Advocacy Director was able to bring in Mr. Abrar Quader, a public health advocate and organizer to help the Flint Water Crisis, this quarter. He spoke about the socioeconomic disparities in healthcare and how we can help as students and future professionals. It was an inspiring and educational experience for the chapter!

            With the school year all wrapped up with the successful Krispy Kreme fundraiser sale during Finals week, we are excited to see how the chapter grows next school year under the leadership of our new presidents Camille Cooley and Jimmy Wester and new Executive Board.

We would like to thank all of our donors and supporters and we can’t wait to update everyone on the improvements our Summer 2016 GROW team will make in Uganda in a few weeks.

GlobeMed at Northwestern has had a successful and exciting past few months! In February, our World Day of Social Justice committee planned an incredible display in our student center that recognized the hardships of Syrian refugees by laying out the items that refugees carry while fleeing the country. 

We had several successful campaigns this winter to raise funds for Adonai from campus. We ran a bake sale during midterms, in which many chapter members came together to bake the goods in our student center and then we completely sold out! We also held a Krispy Kreme sale during finals week at the libraries, which also ended up selling out.

Our Advocacy director and committee put on an incredible panel event that discussed the state of health disparities at home and abroad. This panel discussion featured three incredible speakers who worked in very different realms of health, including a nurse for Doctors Without Borders, the project manager of a medical technologies company, and the senior health planning analyst for the Chicago Department of Public Health. The event explored practices that organizations use to ensure sustainable and and responsible engagement in underserved communities.

We are looking forward to the upcoming annual GlobeMed National Summit at the end of the month, which will be a great opportunity to catch up with other chapters around the country and learn more about what they are doing. Several of our chapter members will be attending, so we cannot wait to see what they learn and gain from this experience!

Looking forward into the spring, we are working very hard to plan our second annual benefit dinner, which will take place on May 12 in Evanston. This event will bring together GlobeMed alumni, global health professionals, and students to learn about our organization, our partnership with Adonai, and more about the global health field in Chicago and beyond. We are so excited that the founder and director of the Adonai Centre, Aloysious Luswata, will be in US during April and May and will be our featured speaker and guest at our benefit dinner. We will also be welcoming Professor Cynthia Salter, MPH from University of Pittsburgh's School of Public Health as our second speaker for the event.

We are also extremely excited to introduce a new executive board led by the chapter co-presidents, Camille Cooley and Jimmy Wester. This board is a team of committed and passionate individuals who are so excited to take their positions to a new level and help Adonai thrive in the next year!
