This summer Diakassan, Kadiatou, Awa and Korotoumou spent several weeks in an innovative STEM camp called iNERDE. This camp aims to help African youths discover their potential in STEM fields and other modern fields that require technical literacy. Only a few schools partner with iNERDE, and we feel very fortunate to have our children participate! They embraced this opportunity for innovative thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and entrepreneurship.

The children also engaged in vocational training over the summer, with Adama & Lassine learning carving and engraving, Fousseyne and Allassane practicing carpentry, and Bille and Salle becoming versed in auto mechanics. Sports activities rounded out the children’s time off, with four of the kids practicing for basketball championships, while Korotoumou et Diakassan continued to train with the national Tae Kwon Do team.

In August the children received a visit from U.S. Embassy Bamako personnel, who brought gifts of food and supplies. We are grateful to the U.S. Marine Corps Embassy Security Group, which sponsored the visit and generous donations. The Americans enjoyed a tour of ACFA’s facility and were introduced one by one to each child. The kids treated them to a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, which prompted one of the Marines to observe: "Watching the Tae Kwon Do demonstration was very impressive. We joked about allowing the girls to use us as dummies for their demo before it started, but after three seconds in, we were all glad that we didn’t! I hope they continue their progress; they are all very talented."

Our children continue to thrive and grow in amazing ways, thanks to your kind support! We are honored and humbled to witness the profound transformation in each child’s life. Thank you for being a part of the ACFA family!

Our children school year ended with great hopes of an outstanding summer!  The girls are participating in a summer camp while the boys are focusing on their sport.  The children are all healthy and enjoying their extra curricular activities.

There were several taekwondo fights with our kids won, and they are now participating in the team selection for the national league.

At Zorokoro, the solar panels are all installed and we are moving on to the purchase of the start up equipment so that we can receive 25 more children before the end of the year. The children greatly appreciate your support. Thank you!

Dear ACFA Friends,

Today we mourn with the world, as terrorist attacks occur throughout Africa and Europe.  For us it all started when on Monday night 21 March, a group of three men attacked the EU Military Mission in Bamako.  There were no injuries thankfully.  The only fatality was one of the gunman, a 16 year old boy who, instead of being in school and preparing his future, was brainwashed and turned into a terrorist.  We then followed with horror the tragedy still unfolding in Brussels and Europe at large.   Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families.

We just wanted to let you know that the ACFA children that you are supporting in Mali are all doing well. They are all on Spring Break this week, in Bamako.  Today, 2 of our girls were pre-selected for their potential participation in the Mali National Basketball Team. Thank you for your continued support.

Dear ACFA Friends,

The children had no heath problems this quarter. Our taekwondo children are doing outstanding: three of our girls earned gold, silver and bronze medals at the Bamako tournament. Two of our children are now in secondary school and they ranked very high in their respective classes. The elementary students are also doing well. ACFA received one intern from the American International School in Bamako who worked with the children on several projects such as drawing, arts and crafts, and English tutoring sessions. In Mar, our basketball players went to play a tournament in Sikasso, Mali’s 3rd region, and earned a bronze medal.  In the U.S., this month we will welcome our new fundraising and administrative associate: more to follow on this project in our next report.

Dear Friends of ACFA,

Let me take this opportunity to share the story of Koro with you. Koro arrived to ACFA in Jun 2010, and when the first meal was served after her arrival, she took the entire dish and ran with it: in her mind, she was trying to secure the next meal as from experience, before arriving to ACFA, she did not experience 2 meals in a row, if there is breakfast, there is no lunch, if there is lunch there is no dinner. Two months later, Koro told me she wanted to be a TV reporter; A year later, Koro ranked number 1 in her class of 100 students, and in 2014, Koro earned her blue belt in Taekwondo. Koro may not be a TV reporter yet, but we’ve helped her have a dream, and now we need to help her achieve that dream.

A week ago, ACFA held its annual fundraising, in Washington DC. As the Mali Ambassador stated: the room was full of love: love for the children, love for the country, love for human kind. Special thanks to all of our supporters who have given to us throughout the years. If you haven’t yet donate and would like to do so, it is not too late. All donations are tax deductible.

This week ACFA’s children in Bamako completed their first semester for school year 2015-2016. They won their basketball and Taekwondo games. We are hiring a fundraising and operations assistant at the beginning of 2016 to help us strategize our fundraising portfolio.

The 20 November extremists attacked on a hotel in Bamako was frightening, but our children are doing well and continue to thrive. We at ACFA have no choice but to adapt, because these children’s lives depend on us. ACFA is working to support the vulnerable children of Mali through education, sport, health care and shelter.

As we close the year, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Maouloud and a Very Happy New 2016 year.
