Second field report

Divorce Alai
Divorce Alai

Alai is jobless, no income, and receives no child support from her ex-husband or the Authority.

To divorce is almost illegal and completely very bad in the northern Sudanese Muslim culture. Alai is not longer accepted by the society since divorced. Her family said she has dishonored them as such they don’t regard her as part of the family. Alai also faced discrimination by women in their residential area because they argued if they are seen moving or associating with a divorced woman as, Alai, they are regarded not reliable and bad reputation will spread over to their families.

According to Khartoum state law – a woman is not allowed to do business of any kind. And the only business, Alai, can do is to brew local alcohol and sell to make money for living. According to sharia law brewing alcohol and selling the substance is illegal. The penalty for brewing alcohol is five years, and 52 slashes by beating on the back, and a fine of £555 Sudanese pounds.

Alai has few options to look after herself, and children. Alai is completely stressed, confused, and disoriented. Any where she is seen people say, Alai, is bad, bad, and bad because of being divorced even though the initiative was from her ex-husband.

Alai lives with her children, and mother in the outskirt of Omdrumann city in the shanty area under the heat of 55 degrees. The area has no electricity, and water. Those who live in this shanty area have no choices in life. The area is for internal displaced people (IDP) from southern Sudan. Alai is still a young woman, and if given the right support tools she can do well in life.

Alai is defeated in life; Alai needs support and children need food as well. Thanks to our GlobalGiving donors who donated $45 to assist with their needs. Hope Ofiriha gave her the $45 – which she changed to £135 Sudanese pounds. She bought foods and provided for herself, mother, and children.

We are appealing to our GlobalGiving donors to continue to support this project. They are in a difficult situation. If we don’t help “her nice children”, will end up on street – or die from hunger since they are too young to beg.

Next progress report will come after three months – where we will tell you how, Alai, and children are doing. Hope Ofiriha will be working with you until the goal of this project are met.

Thanks for your ongoing support!
