With your continued participation, UBECI is able to provide support to girls in Quito and close the gap in opportunity and education. An estimated 70% of children working in the markets in Quito are girls, according to national research, leaving girls vulnerable to a lack of education and opportunity. This past month, UBECI has provided support to 205 girls in Quito by hosting workshops, conducting psychological evaluations, and creating more opportunities for girls.

For children between one-year-old to six years old, known as Encuentro (Discovery), our activities focused on a number of key areas including promoting bonds to create confidence and trust in the children; instilling persistence and concentration in the kids so they are able to accomplish their dreams; motivating creativity, self-esteem, and positive emotions in the children; and developing the motivation, imagination and certainty in the children.

For children between seven years old and 11 years old, known as Desarrollo (Developing), our activities focused on key areas including developing trust and confidence in their decisions and promoting consistency and responsibility in their obligations for school.

For young girls between 12 years old and 16 years old, known as Consolidado (Consolidated), our activities focused on developing positivity and the responsibility of creating it in themselves; reinforcing self-control, learning and intellectual awareness in the kids; and supporting responsibility and voluntary commitments, confidence, and order in academic activities.

This program would not be possible without your continuous support and participation. Any donation amounts makes a difference. For $25, your donation provides materials for girls’ emotional education. For $40, your donation educated four girls about hygiene and provides them with sanitary products.

Thank you for your support.

Hi!

During this month girls (representing 60% of the population) who are receiving UBECI care have several reasons to be happy and to continue to dream of a great future for their lives. Thanks to your help they now have access to healthcare and an education which they haven’t had before due to their gender status. Within the markets there is a marked discrimination towards girls and adolescents who have greater responsibilities than the boys. Unfortunately, the reality of these differing circumstances has been the lack of opportunities for the girls to attend school and to even receive basic medical care, generating a negative impact on their lives.

The extreme poverty of their families results in girls dropping out of school or experiencing motherhood at an early age. Their only option, in many instances, is to work in jobs/activities that help support the family, jobs such as: carrying large packages; being the mother of their smaller siblings; cooking for the entire family, etc. These responsibilities start very early every day, usually they wake up between 3 to 4 in the morning to start their day. However, thanks to the intervention of UBECI and the efforts of its volunteers timely attention is provided that allows the girls to improve their quality of life. Through the workshops, activities focused on gender equality are carried out strengthening in all of the children and their families a different way of thinking about the girls and their mothers, where the importance of an equal coexistence between men and women is ensured. This process brings confidence and self-esteem to the girls so that they feel able to reach opportunities in areas that before have been unreachable. This limitation of opportunities for the girls is due in large part to the traditional social stereotyping of what work/opportunities are appropriate for women and which are appropriate for men and one of the goals of UBECI is to break through these stereotypes.

By motivating the girls to continue studying and their mothers to extend their full support to their daughters’ goals, we have found that the girls are less likely to drop out of school. In addition, striving for a better education has created other positive impacts in the girls’ lives such as: the decrease in hours of work in the markets, a balanced personality and the freedom of thoughts. With UBECI’s support, the restoration of girls’ rights in education and emotional and physical health has become an attainable goal for many of the girls of the market. This in turn improves the living conditions of the girls and their mothers.

Your collaboration will continue to transform the reality of these girls who aspire to be people with a different future from their mothers. With the motivation of the staff and their help, the goal of generating new opportunities for success in their lives will continue to be achieved.

Provide Emotional Support for Girls in Quito- #38497

By UBECI Administrative Volunteer Team

Hola!

We at UBECI wish to share our immense gratitude for your continued support of United to Benefit Ecuadorian Children International (UBECI). Through your donations, we have maintained educational and recreational activities for the economically disadvantaged girls of Quito’s markets who make up 60% of the 685 children UBECI works with.

Your help lets us provide workshops on activities regarding Ecuadorian geography, musical education, traditional dance, national symbols, painting, and art, giving the girls the self-belief and inspiration in various fields that can set them on a path to success, girls who would otherwise have been obliged to assist in sustaining their families through market work to participate in truly enjoyable games and projects.

Recently we had a workshop focusing on stregnthening ideas about identity, gender and rights with us reaching 166 girls in a single week.

From the words of our volunteers:

“When volunteering with UBECI you can see the self-confidence it imparts on the girls it helps. They’re always so friendly to come and speak with the volunteers and eager to get involved in the activities, even those historically associated with masculinity, such as football.” - James

To make more of an impact though we need to raise the funds that will allow us to work with psychologists to maximise the social and emotional support we can provide the girls of Quito.

Your continued support plays a crucial role in allowing our volunteers on the ground to maintain our current projects and to extend education, self-confidence and new opportunities to even more children. Our other ongoing microprojects include our “Dental Care and Education Project” and our “Reduce Work Hours for Ecuador's Street Children Project”. Our Dental Care project aims to provide 250 children with dental evaluations and dental toolkits in order to establish positive hygiene habits, while our “Reduce Work Hours for Ecuador's Street Children Project” gives Quito’s market children the opportunity for a childhood whilst building them a foundation for a successful future via various workshops

Thus, we thank you once again for all of your support and hope to continue our partnership.

Within the last month, UBECI has also launched a second microproject focusing on the young girls and women working in the markets.  With the help and support of our generous donors through GlobalGiving, the “Provide Emotional Support for Girls in Quito” project collaborates with local psychologists in order to evaluate and work to improve the self-esteem of the young girls working in the markets.  In addition, this project works to gradually shift the surrounding community’s focus on the importance of women’s education. Activities such as workshops on healthy self-esteem and emotional and physical care and evaluations from local psychologists the women and young girls (70% of the children working in the markets) will have the opportunity to pursue healthier lifestyles in education and or equal opportunities. The long-term goal for this particular microproject is to shift the focus on women working in the markets towards the importance of providing opportunities for education and equal opportunity.

As part of the mission here at UBECI, staff and volunteers are continuously striving to increase our international support in order to fund the regular campaigns for the Ecuadorian children.  The success of these projects is contingent on the funding provided through our generous donors. As such, we will regularly reach out to international organizations and partners in order to promote the work done by UBECI and fundraise in order to continue support for the impoverished children working in the markets of Quito.

We would like to once again extend our gratitude for your support and hope to continue our partnerships with you!
