Environmental education, breaking paradigms

Generating clean water involves working several aspects around this vital liquid. It involves educating the population and creating greater environmental awareness that reduces pollution.

A few days ago, a campaign was launched under the slogan "Without garbage, we will have a better quality of life", where children from 9 schools of the sector participated, who received training on the three "R's" (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse).

Each child created his own message, which was located in different points of his community, in order to create greater environmental awareness in the population.

In the image, we can see read the message of a child: "Do not throw garbage in the street"

After the launch of the campaign, we have listened to the following testimonies:

Our children have given an important message to adults. They have taught us through their campaign, that a clean community is more beautiful and splendid. And that water sources reduce their pollution.

-Testimony of an inhabitant of one of the communities

After the launch of the campaign, we have been able to observe better control and recycling of garbage. And we have come together to beautify our community. And, above all, avoid pollution. This type of educational campaigns only shows that with little you can do much.

-Testimony of an inhabitant of one of the communities

After listening to these testimonies, and looking at the changes, we believe that education is one of the most important pillars that bring sustainable changes. Therefore, we will continue to bet on including pedagogy as a transversal axis in our programs.

We want to thank you for being part of our success, and for continuing to believe that together we can create change. Show our story to your friends and invite them to be part of our work.

Testimony of two women (see photograph of this story)

The Water Management Board works as a team to offer a quality service to its beneficiaries. They are responsible for ensuring that people in their community receive clean water, and that the water distribution pipe system works correctly. In addition, it works in the protection of the environment.

The leadership of this water management board has been strengthened through a pedagogical process, which promotes gender equity, teamwork, water and basic sanitation, the environment, and others.

Something fantastic and curious in this program, is that the maintenance of the water system has the participation and involvement of women, who are also part of the management board, achieving more inclusion of women in community projects, something that previously was only a dream for them.

Before they invited us to be part of a board of directors, but they never gave us responsibilities, we were practically a figure within the administrative structure, without giving us value and importance. Today we have shown that women can also, and that we deserve equal treatment. We will be the voice and the face of those women invisible for machismo, until we reverse that situation.

We want to thank all the people who support this program, and to say that thanks to this collaboration, we are now achieving significant changes in the quality of life of the beneficiaries. You are also part of our success.

! Together we can do the difference!

Testimony of a woman, member of the water management board

The El Pital water project has promoted and involved the leadership of women in their daily activities, making it possible to acquire knowledge in areas that were previously exclusively for men, because of the machismo that normally predominates in rural Honduras.

Currently I am part of the water management board of El Pital, in addition, responsible for leading the cleaning and maintenance of the water system, as well as the gray water control system of my sector or neighborhood. Being part of the board of water administrator has encouraged and motivated more women in the community to join our board of directors, and to promote basic sanitation activities.

The El Pital water project not only aims to offer quality water and basic sanitation, but also promotes environmental and health education, women's leadership and community empowerment, something that guarantees us to have long-term sustainability.

This project includes these areas of work, thanks to the support of the Un Mundo organization, contributions from individuals and partners, who contribute to improving the quality of life of the people who live in the Cangrejal River sector in northern Honduras.

Garbage, an evil that increases every day...

You can not have quality water, if there is no good control over garbage, and contamination of water sources is reduced.

As a water management board, we do community environmental education, as well as cleaning campaigns, in order to raise awareness about the environment, the importance of depositing the trash in its place, and working on the 3 "R's" reduce, reuse and recycle.

With the campaigns of prevention and cleaning, we have been able to reduce the presence of mosquitos, and with this decrease diseases of dengue, malaria, Zika, Chikungunya ... We have also been successful in enlisting the participation of educational centers and community, in these activities.

We have been able to change the way many people think and act about the subject of garbage, and we are creating more conscious people. Logically this training process has required a lot of attention and dedication. Creating more aware people means that there are significant changes and this helps to improve our environment in general.

Our dream is to have clean, beautiful and healthy communities, and the support of individuals, institutions and organizations has been key to be able to promote this type of programs. We hope to continue having this collaboration, and that together we can contribute to offer a better world to our future generations.

Einstein said: "Do not pretend that things change, if we always do the same"

This slogan we have used in our educational talks, with the aim that each person is aware that their actions determine the result.

A leader who inspires.

Community projects always require a leadership that motivates and inspires the rest of the inhabitants, however, this type of people is not common to find, and if they exist, they do not want to give their time and volunteer service to others.

Our character in this story is the president of the water management board of El Pital, a town in northern Honduras, who, despite his multiple occupations in agriculture, always has time to work for the development of his community.

He currently heads a group of more than 10 volunteers who make up the water management board, and they are working to complete a new clean water connection system that will benefit almost a thousand people. His leadership is so great that, despite having low schooling, he has been a counselor and instructor of construction engineers with basic sanitation projects in his community, and supported the survey.

His dream has always been to offer a clean water project that ensures a better quality of life. They currently have a project design and budget, and they work in search of funds to meet their goals. While managing the funds, he has motivated his community to work on micro projects that address health and environmental issues.

His leadership has been fundamental to the construction of the first gray water control system in rural Honduras, where 50 families were connected to the water treatment system. Likewise, a pilot project was built to build 6 ecological stoves, to reduce the consumption of firewood and have control of the smoke, and reduce respiratory diseases. In addition, it promotes community clean-up campaigns and educates through the water administration board on issues of disease prevention.

Without the advice and training that we have received from the One World organization, my leadership and the rest of my colleagues would not have been possible. This organization applied a famous adage. "Do not deliver the fish, teach how to fish" and that is how we are now able to achieve many dreams on our own initiative. (Testimony of president of water board of El Pital).

The management of funds to complete the clean water connection project continues, so we invite you to join this community dream, which will transform the quality of life of our inhabitants.

Likewise, we thank all the donors who have supported us so far, having the faith that we will continue to have their valuable collaboration, and that new donors will join us.
