The country of Belize is a poor Central American country with over 45% of its population living below the Belize poverty level. St. Mary's School is in the heart of Belize City with the majority of its students coming from households living in extreme poverty. The truancy problem within St. Mary's School has been reduced due to a school lunch program provided to those students who come to school hungry and cannot afford a lunch. The problem is there are not enough chairs and tables.
Providing more chairs and tables for both class room and lunch room will help allow the most needy children to receive a nutritious lunch. Providing lunch reduces truancy issues and increases scholastic levels of the future of Belize...the children. The class rooms are short chairs because most are old and broken from years and years of use. Additional tables and chairs in class rooms increases the quality of grades through better learning and proper nutrition.
Tables and chairs will be purchased from local wood craftsmen making an economic impact on the local community where the average family makes $10,000 per year and pays $14 per gallon for gasoline. Providing an increased quality to the feeding program with sufficient chairs and and tables reduces the truancy issue, and increases quality of education making a long term impact on the future of this beautiful country. The impact in the future will reduce poverty through education and nutrition.
