Uch now feels empowered as our tuk tuk driver

Dear Friends,

We’d like to introduce to you the latest addition to our team. Her name is Uch and she is our tuk tuk driver from Preah Dak village in Siem Reap province.

She’s been driving big motorbikes since 1998, which is pretty uncommon for women in Cambodia. She took on the job with Women’s Resource Center because she is keen to have her own income and the confidence that she can support herself and her children financially. Unfortunately, her first husband ran away leaving her without any money, so being self-dependable is really important to her.

With her current husband’s and our help, she has worked out a financial plan for her family that allows her to work with us and still have time to do the household chores (her husband even said he would help with the chores too!).

She’s already taken Lucky (our tuk tuk) out for a spin, chauffeuring participants and their children to and from our recent Parents Talk workshop at the Center. We’re so happy to have such a strong woman on our team. And this all came about because of your support, so thank you!

Find out what else we have been up to these past few months by checking out our Facebook page.

Dear Friends,

You know that end-of-year fundraising goal you helped us achieve? Well, we’ve used that money and bought Women’s Resource Center a tuk tuk.

Now we can transfer participants to and from our workshops and counseling services. The tuk tuk will also support us with our outreach activities like following up with women in the villages and conducting surveys, or transporting supplies for workshops in schools.

We just have to do a few more things before we take this baby out on the road. This includes:

  • Hiring a women driver and daytime security guard
  • Hiring a nighttime security guard
  • Painting the tuk tuk our WRC green with our logo

What do you think? Let us know on Facebook. We’ll post more updates on our new tuk tuk to our page.

Thanks again for helping us to reach and empower even more women in Cambodia.

Dear Friends,

We at Women’s Resource Center just wrapped up our International Women’s Day festivities on Sunday with a showing of photos and surveys taken by participants in our new Through Our Lens media workshop (in partnership with PhotoForward) for creative expression and community research through photography and filmmaking. All supplies are donated, and we find it to be an excellent and empowering outlet for the Cambodian women we work with. I’ve included photos of the event for you at the end of this message.

Hopefully you saw on our Facebook page that you helped us exceed our $3,000 year-end fundraising goal – thank you so much! (If you haven’t connected with us on Facebook, you can like our page here to keep in touch!) We are so fortunate to have the support of people like you, and although we didn’t win the GlobalGiving match, thanks to your generosity we now have enough money for a tuktuk to easily enable women and girls to access our workshops and counseling support – it's next on our shopping list! What a difference this will make in the lives of the women who seek support at Women’s Resource Center.

Thank you again for being a great friend to the women of Cambodia! Your support is changing lives every day!

Sally

We have just $1600 left to raise to be eligible for a $3000 bonus through GlobalGiving’s Giving Challenge! If you have given already, THANK YOU. If you haven’t, please consider making a tax-deductible gift to Women’s Resource Center today so we can meet the December 31st deadline!

Your gifts will help us make two very important additions to our facilities in 2015:

1. A computer for our library space so women can go online to research jobs, health information, etc.

2. A tuk tuk (motorcycle taxi) to transport women to and from our office so no woman misses out on education at WRC due to lack of transportation

Here’s an update on just a few monumental accomplishments we were able to make this year due to your generosity:

  • Moved to a new space that holds 3 times the students to accommodate increased demand for our programs, and added 3 new staff members
  • Launched our new Riel Change financial literacy workshop to help Cambodian women gain financial independence
  • Spoke on human trafficking at the Vatican in November – we even met the Pope! Our Managing Director, Pisey, was invited by the Global Freedom Network to present recommendations to the Vatican and Network at the Symposium, Young People Against Prostitution and Human Trafficking.

Your gifts accomplished so much in 2014; won’t you help us go even further to reach more Cambodian women in need?

Thank you so much for your support. Happy New Year to you and your loved ones!

We hope you’re enjoying your holiday season! We have a story to share with you about a woman called Ty whose life you’ve touched through your contributions to Women’s Resource Center. (Thank you!)

Because there are many more women we still need to reach, though, I first must tell you about this: GlobalGiving has challenged us to raise $3000 by the end of the year, funds critical to continuing our programs in 2015. If do, we are eligible to win up to another $3000 in the Giving Challenge!

This grant is only available if we hit $3000 in the next 2 weeks! We hope you’ll take a moment to renew your commitment to Cambodian women by donating today. Thank you so much for your support.

Your gift goes toward helping Cambodian women create better lives for themselves and their children. One of them has allowed us to share her story with you today. Out of respect for her privacy, let's call her Ty:

Ty came to Women’s Resource Center ready to give up her daughter for adoption. At just three years old, Ty’s daughter is severely disabled in body and mind, and she is mute. Ty doesn’t know what her daughter’s affliction is because she can’t afford a doctor’s visit for a diagnosis. Understandably, Ty arrived overwhelmed and wanting a better life for her daughter. She was unable to find work since her daughter required her attention throughout the day.

After learning from her WRC counselor of the hazards of Cambodian orphanages, Ty quickly decided an orphanage wasn't the place she had hoped for her little girl. She needed love and care, and Ty wanted to be the person to provide it. She told us, "I want to keep her and I want her to be happy and healthy."

Ty’s WRC counselor worked with her to identify her strengths and create a plan for a steady income. Ty is a gifted seamstress and dreamt of working from home sewing while caring for her daughter. We connected her with a local foundation offering small business loans and coached her through the process.

Ty secured her loan and just started her own stall in the market in her town! Ty lives in her market stall as well as works there - she has room for both, and now she has her daughter with her in her care full-time.

What about Ty’s daughter? WRC introduced Ty to a local health organization that now makes house calls to ensure Ty’s daughter’s needs are met. She now is in physiotherapy to help her development. There is no cure for what ails her, but she will have quality care and grow up knowing the feel of her mother’s touch.

Ty’s life was transformed, and it only took 7 weeks (and your help!). Her daughter will have a better life, too, because of you and the community of donors who keep Women’s Resource Center’s doors open.

Thank you so much for making this story possible. If you’re able, please contribute to our Giving Challenge so we have many more success stories to share with you in 2015. For every woman we reach, there are hundreds more in need of an advocate. Please help us reach those women in 2015.
