During the last six months, we continued supporting SMART sites, namely Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve, Bikin National Park, and the United direction of Land of the Leopard National Park, Kedrovaya Pad Nature Reserve, Ussuriisky Nature Reserve and Far Eastern Marine Reserve. The anti-poaching teams protected the wildlife and the habitat through regular patrols (on foot, by motorized vehicles, boats, etc.) on the assigned territories. Phoenix in close cooperation with WCS continued holding feedback meetings between protected area management staff and rangers in order to discuss patrol efforts and results and options for improvement. Overall patrol quality at existing SMART sites remains good. SMART allows effectively use human and material resources for patrolling PAs and combating poaching. We motivated rangers to work with SMART and improve their efforts. For excellent performance, the rangers were provided with incentives.
Below we present the results of law enforcement efforts achieved in PAs during the reported period.
In total the teams conducted:
8 259 km foot patrols, 161 950 km motorized patrols, 24 120 km snowmobile patrols, 2 259 km quadbike patrols, 26 394 km boat patrols.
Additionally, thanks to camera traps installed in PAs, the rangers managed to prevent and reveal violations, or catch violators red-handed. The rangers were sent out to camera trap location promptly after a photo with potential violators moving into or out of a protected area was received. For example, on June 16 at 4 a.m. a camera trap produced a photo of a man with a gun entering protection zone of Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve. Immediately, the rangers rushed to the spot and found a wooden boat supposedly abandoned by a violator. It was decided to set an ambush in the immediate vicinity of the boat. At 8:56 a.m. a camera trap produced a photo of the same man with a gun and a backpack. At 9:16 a.m. the man returned to the boat and was apprehended by rangers. His backpack was full of wild meat of a sika deer. An administrative citation was issued upon the violator; meat and gun were seized.
