Summary

Just Shea aims to help the 600,000 women who harvest shea in Ghana by giving them protective clothing to save them from snake bites, creating cooperative silos which will radically raise their income, thus increasing the number of their children who are educated. Challenge

Harvesting shea is only women's work in Ghana and the 600,000 women harvesters must work before dawn or after dusk. This also the time when venomous snakes are awoken and bite 30,000 women. Just Shea was established to provide protective gear, hats, boots, and gloves to the shea harvesters, and to create a communal silo system to increase the profits to the harvesters by obviating their need to sit by the side of the road. Giving the women more income, time and better health.

Solution

Just Shea is a high end cosmetics company, which utilizes the shea butter collected by the women in our program. These products, for face, hands and feet mirror the women of Ghana's need for protection from snakes by providing them with hats, gloves and boots. The profits from the amazing Just Shea products are funneled back to the women and their families. We aim to protect the women and rectify the economic supply chain inequities. Our long range goals include constructing a factory.

Long-Term Impact

30,000 women are bitten by snakes while gathering shea nuts - our program of providing protective gear can end this problem. As well we are seeking to end the supply delivery inequities which arise because the shea buyers only pay top dollar when the women bring their crops into towns. So by building co-operative silos the women will earn 40 cents a kilo rather than the 10 cents a kilo they earn by sitting by the side of the road. More income, better health, stronger families.
